AFL Round 16 Preview & Betting Tips
Melbourne vs GWS
Sunday 3:20pm AEST, July 2nd, TIO Traeger Park
Melbourne sit firmly within the top four after 15 rounds, despite losing three of their last five matches. After a blistering start to the 2023 campaign, in which the Demons scored freely and returned to their 2021 best, Melbourne’s attacking prowess has waned and they have failed to score more than 76 points in a match since Round 9. However, it’s worth noting that Melbourne’s trademark accuracy in front of goal has also disappeared throughout this period – the Demons have kicked 24.46 over the last three weeks. As such, many are starting to question the premiership credentials of Simon Goodwin’s men. Making matters worse, star midfielder Clayton Oliver is still missing from the side as he battles to recover from a hamstring injury which threatens to derail his season. Michael Hibberd will also be absent this weekend after sustaining a lacerated kidney in last weekend’s 15-point loss to Geelong.
The Giants, on the other hand, are on an upward curve after winning their last two games with ease. GWS may be 14th on the table, but they are now within striking distance of the top eight and will regain several star players over the coming weeks – Jesse Hogan and Isaac Cumming are back this week, while Josh Kelly will also return shortly. As such, it’s not crazy to suggest that the Giants can play finals football this year. That being said, most of the wins for the men in orange have come against weaker opposition, so they will be keen to claim a big scalp in the red centre.
Melbourne have had the better of this matchup in recent years, winning three of the last four games between these sides. Furthermore, the Demons have plenty of experience playing in the hot conditions at TIO Traeger Park, so the venue should present them with a significant advantage. Another factor in Melbourne’s favour is the fact that GWS are coming off the bye – very few teams have won after a week off this season. As such, the Demons should get the job done here.

Kysaiah Pickett 2+ Goals – Pickett has had an up and down season in 2023, kicking 21 goals in 12 matches. Nevertheless, the Melbourne livewire loves playing up North, as he showed last year with a six-goal performance against Port Adelaide.
Toby Greene 2+ Goals – The Giants skipper has had a great year, kicking 36 goals in 12 games at an average of three per match. Greene will be a key player in this game, and I can’t see a clear matchup for him from the Melbourne defence.
Toby Bedford 1+ Goals – Bedford has made a solid start to his time at GWS, adding plenty of pressure and flair to the Giants forward line. Coming up against his former side, Bedford will be out to prove a point on Sunday, and I’m backing him to add to his goal tally.
