Welcome to our horse racing preview and betting tips for racing on Sunday, April 5th.
We've got a big day of feature racing in Hong Kong today but there's also a few feature races in country Australia, with the Gundagai Cup, Wellington Boot and Wellington Town Plate.
Luke Krahe has previewed those three feature races below, along with his best bet of the day at Echuca!
Horse Racing Tips: Sunday, April 5th
Gundagai Race 7 - (Market)
The feature of the day at Gundagai is the Cup, (5) Bezos looks a great each-way bet and will probably get double-figure odds at some stage of the betting. He has had six runs this time in, placing at two and winning the last couple. Two starts back at Corowa in a much easier Class 2, he led all the way over the mile and won comfortably in the end after being challenged approaching the straight. He then went to Albury last time and was forced to sit outside the speed in a harder race, hit the front early in the straight and stuck on well to score. Three horses out of that race have run again for two second’s and a win, the form looks good out of it. Drawn wide out to the 1800m, they will push on and be hard to run down, especially if able to get down to the rail first.
Wellington Race 7 - (Market)
The time-honoured Wellington Boot for the babies, (14) Zeftabrook goes on top at her third career start. He was scratched for the Kindergarten Stakes at Randwick yesterday and is nominated for the Percy Sykes next week back in the city. He had one start before getting sent back to the paddock and resumed at Muswellbrook two weeks ago. He opened favourite and was a big drifter in the betting. She sat behind the leaders and eased around them in the straight before putting them away to in comfortably by more than 3 lengths and defy the alarming betting drift. She steps up to 1200m and maps well again. The danger looks to be the first-starter for the Snowden yard (3) Colonel who has trialed well, watch the betting with him. If there is no serious money for him, the confidence will be high with Zeftabrook.
Wellington Race 8 - (Market)
The Wellington Town Plate and once again we have settled on the likely favourite (6) Burning Crown to win. The Sue Grills trained gelding is resuming, he has a win and a placing from two previous second-up runs. He has good tactical speed and I like the fact he is drawn out wide, he should have time to work across from the outside gate and take up the running. He was very good in a recent trial at Muswellbrook, if he does land on the bunny early, bet again in the run.
Echuca Race 2 - (Market)
(6) Favell has been to the races three times, he debuted at Bendigo and didn’t have much luck placing after being held-up at a vital stage. He then went to the big track at Sandown and sat behind the leader, he was held-up badly for most of the straight before getting out late and hitting the line hard. He probably should have won that day. Last start at the Valley, he sat three-wide no cover throughout on the speed and faded late after a torrid run. He gets the good middle draw and should be on the speed for a long way, this looks no harder and wit the right run, should be breaking the duck.
