We return to Happy Valley tonight after an exhilarating Centenary Sprint meeting on Sunday at Sha Tin. Zac Purton is fresh of a 6-timer so could still be hot in the saddle tonight. Keen to see what happens out on the turf.

Happy Valley Racing Tips: Wednesday January 31st
Race 2: Fleming Hcp (C5) - 1200m (21:10 AEST)
(3) Colonel looks like he’ll lead this race easily even from the wide gate. Down in C5 he’s won 1 race from 2 attempts and has Zac Purton aboard to turn that into 2 from 3 tonight. Hard to beat.
(2) Hercules is the main danger for me in that if Colonel is going to get beat, it doesn’t appear as though it’ll be a horse on the speed that beats him. Hercules is drawn wide but will be rattling home.
(7) Modest Gentleman had a solid win last start and can go close to repeating here. Tough task to beat the favourite but a solid hope nonetheless.
(3) Colonel e/w
$4.60/$2.00 (1 unit)
Race 5: Luard Hcp (C4) - 1650m (22:40 AEST)
(1) Red Majesty is the outsider in this field. Although he’s the likely leader, drops in class, and gets 2.5kg off his back for Alfie Chan. Big roughie but strong hope.
(2) Noble Pursuit offers absolutely no gauge as to where he’s at. He wouldn’t be favourite without a strong winning chance, but he’s impossible to back given the lack of information and recent race experience.
(8) Turin Warrior will get back from a wider draw and need luck to win here. If there’s enough pace on, he’s not out of it, but his winning strike rate doesn’t make me any more hopeful.
(1) Red Majesty e/w
$23/$5.5 (1 unit)
Race 9: O’Brien Hcp (C3) - 1650m (00:50 AEST)
(8) Simply Maverick is the best chance of winning this race. He can stalk the speed and with not a lot of it on paper, he possesses a lethal turn of foot in the straight to steal this victory.
(12) Red Hare King is the leader on the speed map and could prove hard to catch if they sit and sprint, particularly if this horse gets a head start and kicks early.
(1) Gallant Waking is one horse that has proven impossible to catch for me. I back him when he loses and let him go when he wins. He’s close to winning his way into C2 which could happen tonight after a string of solid performances.
(8) Simply Maverick win
$2.80 (2 units)
