AFL Round 21 Preview & Betting Tips
GWS vs Sydney
Saturday 7:30pm AEST, August 5th, GIANTS Stadium
There have been a few important finals played between GWS and Sydney over the years, but their Round 21 clash is expected to be just as hotly contested. Both teams are in need of a win to help secure a finals berth, so you can expect a great battle at GIANTS Stadium on Saturday night.
GWS have put themselves in a terrific position to play finals this year after reeling off seven wins in a row, which is the highest such streak in the competition coming into this weekend. They pulled off a miracle comeback win against the Bulldogs in Ballarat last weekend, and that would’ve felt extra special considering the rivalry that’s built up between those teams in recent seasons.
Toby Greene continues to lead by example in his first season as captain. He kicks another five majors against the Bulldogs last weekend, taking his total for the season up to 49 which is a new career-high. Even more impressive, it’s only taken the superstar 17 games to get to his current total, going at a rate of 2.9 goals per contest.
Sydney have also been in a rich vein of form since the midway part of the season. They’ve collected six-and-a-half wins since Round 10 and enter this weekend on a season-high three-match win streak. They secured a two-point win against the Bombers last weekend, which was their third win by three points or less this campaign.
On another positive note, the Swans have now won two in a row on the road with both wins coming against teams that were vying for a top eight spot. It’s a great sign of improvement considering they held a 2-5 win-loss record on the road prior.
Once again, the Swans will be the away team this weekend, although they face much stiffer opposition on this occasion. They failed to defeat their crosstown rivals earlier this season at the SCG (106-107) and won’t find it any easier playing them on their home turf at GIANTS Stadium.
The Swans are on the improve but might’ve just left their run to the finals a little late. You simply can’t back against the Giants on recent form and as such, taking them to cover the small -6.5 handicap appeals.

GWS to Win – Just think the Giants are good value considering their recent form. Seven wins in a row and playing on their home deck.
Errol Gulden 25+ Disposals – What a player this guy has become. Surely an All-Australian lock now. He’s had 25+ disposals in six of his last seven outings.
Stephen Coniglio 25+ Disposals – Has put together a tremendously consistent season. He’s averaging a tick under 29 touches a game and has had 25+ in 17/19 games.
Toby Greene 15+ Disposals – He’s a big game player and they don’t get much bigger than this. He’ll be around the footy enough to get 15+ disposals.
