AFL Round 23 Preview & Betting Tips
Fremantle vs Port Adelaide
Saturday 4:35pm AEST, August 19th, GIANTS Stadium
The final match of AFL Round 23 is far from a dead rubber, at least from Port Adelaide’s point of view. They’ll head to Perth on Sunday in need of a win to keep their top two hopes alive. Standing in their way however, are a Fremantle side that have caused a couple of upsets with wins against quality opposition in recent weeks.
Fremantle have had an up and down season and haven’t been able to recapture the heights they reached in 2022, but have still made some steady progress in key areas. They enter this clash off a massive 101 point win against rivals West Coast, which would’ve certainly put some smiles on their supporters faces.
In fact, the Dockers have produced some of their better form for 2023 when finals have been out of the equation. They upset the Cats three weeks ago in Geelong by seven points before coming oh so close to defeating the second-placed Lions are fortnight ago. These results show us and their fans that they’re not too far away.
Meanwhile, Port Adelaide were able to get their season back on track with a very strong win over the dangerous GWS last weekend. The Power dominated from the outset in what was easily their best four-quarter performance for a number of weeks, eventually winning by a scoreline of 136-85.
The Power’s win last week snapped a four-game losing streak that was clearly worrying their fans, although the side had some genuine excuses in all four losses. Still, the Power remain in third position on the ladder and look in good shape to attack the finals in a couple of weeks’ time.
Although the Dockers have produced some strong footy in recent weeks, it’s only normal for teams like them (not playing for finals) to have one eye on the season end date. It would take a strong effort from their young side to be able to topple the Power who are still a genuine chance to make the top two and secure a home qualifying final. With that in mind, I’m keen to take the Power to cover the small handicap on the road.

Port Adelaide to Win – The side with something to play for usually finds a way to win at this stage of the season. The Power fit the bill.
Jye Amiss 2+ Goals – He’s had an impressive season and should be able to hit the scoreboard against the Power who don’t have many quality key defenders other than the intercepting Aliir Aliir.
Zak Butters 25+ Disposals – After a couple of quiet weeks, Butters has been back in peak form in recent outings. He should get to at least 25 disposals here.
