EPL 2024-25: Matchday 6 Preview & Betting Tips
Newcastle vs Manchester City
St James’ Park, Saturday 28th September, 9:30pm AEST
The weekend’s action kicks off in Newcastle as the league leading Manchester City travel north to take on sixth placed Newcastle. A 98th minute goal from John Stones secured a point for Pep Guardiola’s side in a top of the table clash, which was a frustrating encounter for City. Arsenal went down to ten men on the brink of half time and parked the bus, with City having 33 shots to Arsenal’s 5, and 78% possession. It was the first time Manchester City had conceded two goals in a game in eleven games.
Newcastle lost their first game of the season in a shock 3-1 result against Fulham, as they struggled to impact from heavy possession. Newcastle had 62% possession but conceded 22 shots to Fulham, whilst only managing to have 5 shots on target. It’s not a favourable match up for Eddie Howe’s side who have struggled badly against the defending champions over the last 18 years. Since 2006 the Magpies have won one out of 33 Premier League matches against Manchester City, and have lost 27 games against City in that time period.
Despite the frustration of not getting all three points last week, it was an utterly dominant performance from Man City who have scored the most goals of any side through the first five games of the season (13). Newcastle have scored just seven goals and although they have been winning, have struggled to capitalise on their dominance in general play. The gap in attacking quality will be the difference between the two sides, and City will keep their place at the top of the table.

Chelsea vs Brighton
Stamford Bridge, Sunday 29th September, 12:00am AEST
Chelsea have come out of the blocks strong to start season ‘24/’25, with a 3-1-1 record after five games. Chelsea have won three of their last four games after starting the season with a loss, with their latest outing a 3-0 win over West Ham. Brighton have stagnated after winning their first two games of the season, with three consecutive draws. Their last two games have been against Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest, which has been a major missed opportunity to establish themselves up the top of the table.
Chelsea have been dynamic in the front half scoring eleven goals in their last four games, ranking only second to Manchester City. Nicolas Jackson (4 goals) and Noni Madueke (3) have led the way, as the Blues have started the season in the way they ended last season. Brighton conceded two goals from three shots on target against Nottingham Forest, and could be incredibly vulnerable against an in-form Chelsea.
Chelsea won both fixtures against the Seagulls last season, scoring five goals across the two games. Enzo Marseca has his side playing a high tempo brand of football that has caused opposing sides plenty of headaches early in the season. These are two sides on opposite runs of form right now, and Chelsea are playing full of confidence unlike their counterparts.

Manchester United vs Tottenham
Old Trafford, Monday 30th September, 1:30am AEST
Two of the most disappointing teams face off at Old Trafford in a crucial clash on Monday morning. Manchester United and Tottenham are occupying 10th and 11th places on the Premier League table, with both clubs having 2-1-2 records heading into Matchday 6. Tottenham are coming into this fixture on a higher note than United, with a 3-1 win over Brentford last week.
The Red Devils had another day to forget on Matchday 5, held to a 0-0 draw by 16th placed Crystal Palace, who are yet to win a game this season. Despite having 15 shots to 9 and 67% possession, United couldn’t score which has been a major issue so far this season. Erik ten Hag’s side is the 17th ranked attack in the league, with just five goals from five games.
Manchester United are winless from their last three Premier League fixtures against Tottenham, conceding two goals in each of the three fixtures. United haven’t held Spurs goalless since 2022, and given their struggles in the front third this season, they don’t have the capacity to win a shootout. Spurs finally found some form last week and match up well against the Red Devils, Postecoglou’s men will pile on more misery for United.
