EPL 2024-25: Matchday 11 Preview & Betting Tips

Brighton vs Manchester City

American Express Stadium, Sunday 10th November, 4:30am AEDT

After moving into top spot after the completion of Matchday 9, it only took one game for Manchester City to give away top spot thanks to a shocking defeat against Bournemouth. Despite having control of general play, the defending champions found themselves 2-0 at the 64-minute mark, a deficit they couldn’t overcome. Brighton also fell on the table after Matchday 10’s results, after conceding two goals in two minutes to surrender a lead away at Anfield. Brighton were impressive against quality opposition, but the 2-1 has seen them drop from 6th to 8th.

The defeat against Bournemouth was the first loss of the season for Pep Guardiola’s side, who are the second-best attacking team in the league (21 goals scored) and the equal fourth best defence (11 goals conceded). Brighton on the other hand have had a leaky defence of late, conceding 10 goals across their last three games. The defending champions have scored 3 or more goals in eight of their last fourteen Premier League matches against Brighton.

Manchester City are incredibly tough to face when coming off a loss, in the last six seasons they have only lost back-to-back games once. Their record against Brighton reads as a major concern for the Seagulls. Since Brighton’s promotion in 2017, City have had 12 wins, one draw and one loss in Premier League fixtures against Brighton. Expect a rampant City outfit to bounce back as they have done in the Pep Guardiola era.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa

Anfield, Sunday 10th November, 7:00am AEDT

Liverpool were the big winners of a chaotic Matchday 9, moving to the top of the league with goals from Cody Gakpo and Mo Salah in the 70th and 72nd minutes to overcome a 1-0 deficit against Brighton. Liverpool faces another top six opponent in Aston Villa this week, who will be desperate to bounce back after a horrendous showing in their 4-1 defeat against Tottenham. The defeat has seen Aston Villa fall out of the top four at a terrible time given two of their next three games are against Liverpool and Chelsea who sit first and fourth.

Aston Villa’s last six weeks have been a concern, recording one win, three draws and a loss. Unai Emery’s side are currently ranked in the bottom half of the league defensively, and they’re coming up against one of the most dangerous attacking teams in the league. The Reds possess two of the top eight goal scorers in the league with Mo Salah (ranked 4th, 7 goals) and Luis Diaz (ranked 8th, 5 goals). Salah is also ranked equal second in the Premier League for assist (5), in what has been a remarkable start to the season.

Liverpool have been nothing short of dominant against Aston Villa over the last decade. 10 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss across their last 13 Premier League matches against Aston Villa. Anfield has been a graveyard for Aston Villa, who haven’t won a Premier League match at the venue since 2014. Liverpool are firing on all cylinders with five wins and a draw from their last six games, the same however cannot be said for Aston Villa. The Reds will keep hold of top spot with a comfortable victory at home.

Chelsea vs Arsenal

Stamford Bridge, Monday 11th November, 1:00am AEDT

A massive all London clash rounds out Matchday 11, with Arsenal in desperate need of a victory when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Gunners are winless in their last three games with a draw and two losses after their 1-1 defeat against Newcastle last week. Chelsea moved up to fourth place after their 1-1 draw against Manchester United, with Moises Caicedo securing a point at Old Trafford with a 74th minute equaliser.

Arsenal’s recent struggles have come from a severe lack of creativity and attacking potency, the Gunners have scored only two goals across their last three games and have gone goalless in two of the three games. Arsenal have struggled to generate quality opportunities in general play, they have been heavily reliant on set pieces which is a major concern. The defensive fall off from Mikel Arteta’s side has also been alarming, conceding ten goals in the last six games after only conceding one goal in the opening four games of the season.

Chelsea have a 5-3-1 record over the last nine games, with their only two defeats this season coming against the best two sides in the league - Liverpool and Manchester City. Both Chelsea and Arsenal have played in three draws each this season, and given the way the Gunners are currently playing, they will be trying to make this game a slog against a Chelsea side that has shown plenty of potency this season. Arsenal have shown a tendency to be comfortable with playing for draws against top four opponents in recent seasons, and that trend will continue this weekend.
