EPL 2023-24: Matchday 7 Preview & Betting Tips
Aston Villa vs Brighton
Villa Park, Saturday 30th September, 9:30pm AEST
Matchday 7 kicks off with a battle of third versus sixth as Aston Villa takes on Brighton at Villa Park. Both clubs come into this game in hot form, winning four of their last five games, in what have been impressive seasons for two clubs that are punching well above their weight. Aston Villa come into this game on the back of a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while Brighton took care of Bournemouth in a 3-1 win.
Brighton have played an enterprising brand of football through the first six games of the season, with a midfield that has controlled the tempo of the game and given their attackers an abundance of opportunities. Brighton’s average of 62.7% possession is ranked fourth in the Premier League, which has allowed them to generate 106 shots on goal which is the second most in the league. These are the factors that have made Brihgton the number one ranked attacking team in the Premier League this season, with their eighteen goals coming from eight different goal scorers, which makes them a nightmare for opposing defences.
Despite a positive start to the season, Villa have struggled in defence ranking fifteenth in the Premier League for goals conceded. Although Villa are in form, this looms as a nightmare matchup with the attacking variety that the Seagulls possess. For a battle of sixth versus third, Brighton are playing significantly better football in all three facets of the game. Brighton are excellent value in this fixture, and will keep the pressure on Liverpool and City at the top of the league.

Wolverhampton vs Manchester City
Molineux Stadium, Sunday 1st October, 12:00am AEDT
Manchester City will be looking for a seventh straight win to start the season when they travel to the Molineux to face Wolves. The defending champions managed to defeat Nottingham Forest 2-0 despite playing the entirety of the second half with only ten men after Rodri was sent off. Wolverhampton have had a tough start to the season, with a 1-1-4 record which sees them in sixteenth place, only three points away from the relegation zone.
City’s consistency at both ends of the pitch has once again been the key to the defending champions success. Pep Guardiola’s side are the number one ranked defence, and the number two ranked attacking side in the league. Wolverhampton have conceded the third most goals in the league this season, and conceded 20 shots on goal against eighteenth placed Luton Town last week. Wolves were extremely fortunate that Luton Town failed to capitalise, however if they allow City to have 20 shots on goal this week, it’s going to be a brutal result.
To no surprise, the league leaders have dominated Wolverhampton over the past few years, winning their last six Premier League fixtures against Wolves. Those six wins have come with an aggregate score line of 21-3, with Wolves failing to score in their last two meetings against City. Everything points towards one way traffic in this clash, and it could get out of hand for Wolves early in this game. Pep Guardiola’s side are rolling and they’ll keep their perfect record intact with a convincing win.

Tottenham vs Liverpool
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Sunday 1st October, 3:30am AEDT
The highlight of Matchday 7’s slate of games sees Tottenham hosting Liverpool in a crucial top four clash. After a draw on the opening weekend of the season, Liverpool have reeled off five consecutive victories, with the latest a 3-1 win over West Ham. Ange Postecoglou’s first North London Derby ended in a 2-2 draw, which has Spurs still unbeaten after six games. A victory for Tottenham could see them end the weekend as high as second on the Premier League table, with two points separating Spurs and Liverpool.
There should be no shortage of goals in this match up, both clubs have scored fifteen goals from their opening six games, ranked equal third. Given the opposition they’ve played so far, the Reds form line stacks up a bit better than Tottenham. Their head-to-head record against Tottenham should have Jurgen Klopp’s side feeling very confident heading into Sunday’s game. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eleven Premier League games against Spurs, with Tottenham’s last league victory over the Reds coming back in 2017.
In that time period Liverpool have beaten Tottenham eight times, including twice last season. Although this is a new Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou, it’s a nightmare matchup for Spurs given how Liverpool’s front three has performed against them over the last six years. Tottenham have the capability to challenge Liverpool going forward however there are still plenty of questions around their defence, and that’s where Liverpool will gain the upper hand in this fixture.
