EPL 2022-23: Matchday 3 Preview & Betting Tips
Tottenham vs Wolverhampton
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Saturday 20th August, 9:30pm (AEST)
Wolverhampton travel to London for the opening fixture on Matchday 3, to take on Tottenham. Wolves have had a poor start to the season with a defeat against Leeds and a draw against Fulham, while Spurs have had quite a positive start to their campaign. Tottenham have one win and one draw to start this season, after a 96th minute equaliser from Harry Kane secured Spurs a point in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Chelsea.
Wolverhampton were the seventeenth ranked attack last season, scoring just 38 goals from 38 games. With only one goal from their opening two games against two sides that are expected to be battling relegation, it’s clear Wolves haven’t solved their struggles in the front third. Their inability to score is simply unsustainable, and they’re in for a serious battle this season if they can’t improve.
These teams have near opposite expectations this season with Spurs challenging for top four and Wolves set to be fighting for survival. Tottenham have won two of their last three Premier League games against Wolverhampton and have won their last four Premier League games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Three of those four wins have come by margins above two goals, and Spurs shouldn’t have any troubles getting past a struggling Wolverhamapton outfit.

Newcastle vs Manchester City
St James’ Park, Monday 22nd August, 1:30am (AEST)
It’s first vs fifth as the defending champions head north to take on Newcastle looking to make it three wins from three games to kick off their aspirations for a three peat. It’s been a near flawless start from Manchester City, with a 2-0 win over West Ham and a 4-0 demolition of Bournemouth to kick off their title defence.
Newcastle have four points from their opening two games, with a 0-0 draw against Brighton last week a lucky escape thanks to a remarkable game from keeper Nick Pope. Brighton had 13 shots on goal with 7 on target, to Newcastle’s 4 shots and 1 on target, but Pope kept Brighton at bay. Pope will have his work cut out for him once again, but against a far more talented opposition.
Manchester City has a 5-1-0 record in their last six Premier League fixtures against Newcastle, with five of those six games hitting over 3.5 goals. The aggregate score across those six fixtures is 22-5 in favour of Man City. Coming off a 4-0 win last week, City are in a strong position to put up plenty of goals against an opposition they’ve had plenty of success against.

Manchester United vs Liverpool
Old Trafford, Tuesday 23rd August, 5:00am (AEST)
It’s once again a complete crisis at Manchester United, after a 4-0 defeat to Brentford saw the Red Devils slump to the bottom of the Premier League table. It doesn’t get any easier for the Red Devils when they host Liverpool, who beat them 9-0 across their two fixtures last season.
It’s been a surprisingly slow start for Liverpool, with draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace to begin their season. A complete brain fade from star signing Darwin Nunez which saw him red carded, forced the Reds to ten men which cost them dearly in their 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. Jurgen Klopp received plenty of criticism for starting Harvey Elliott and James Milner, with the Liverpool midfield struggling badly.
Manchester United haven’t beaten Liverpool in the Premier League since 2018, Since that win Liverpool have had five wins and three draws against the Red Devils, with an aggregate scoreline of 17-3 in those five wins. Liverpool has already dropped points in their opening two games, so they will be out to send a statement against a United side that is an absolute rabble.
Liverpool -1

More EPL Matchday 3 Tips
Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa (Sunday 12am AEST)
Palace would be pleased to grab a point at Anfield last weekend but would also feel as though it was an opportunity missed given they were playing against 10 men for the majority of the second half. Regardless, not many teams come away from Anfield with anything tangible and they now have a fantastic opportunity to build on that performance at home against Villa. As long as they perform somewhere close to their best level, they should be able to secure the chocolates.
Crystal Palace H2H ($2.45 at Ladbrokes)
Everton vs Nottingham Forest (Sunday 12am AEST)
Everton have started the season with two losses by a goal each but get their chance to win at home against Forest this weekend. Forest secured probably the luckiest win I’ve ever seen last weekend against West Ham and will need to lift their level quite a bit if they’re to survive this season. I expect Everton to be too strong here.
Everton H2H ($1.92 at Ladbrokes)
Fulham vs Brentford (Sunday 12am AEST)
Fulham have shown they’re capable to be competitive at the top level in the early part of the season and will take on a Bees outfit that did the same thing in their return to the top flight last campaign. Both sides will feel as though they can get three points out of this fixture, which will make for an attacking and entertaining match. With that said. Over 2.5 goals looks to be the play.
Over 2.5 Goals ($1.91 at Ladbrokes)
Leicester vs Southampton (Sunday 12am AEST)
Leicester and Southampton are two teams that not many expect to finish too high up the ladder this season and both have had slow starts so far. Defence has been the issue for both sides in their opening two fixtures with each conceding six goals to date. This should make for another high-scoring fixture on Saturday night.
Both Teams to Score ($1.57 at Ladbrokes)
Bournemouth vs Arsenal (Sunday 2:30am AEST)
Many pundits had the Gunners as one of the big improvers this season and that has certainly been franked by their impressive start to the season. They’ve won their opening two matches by two goals each and now get a look at Bournemouth who many expect to struggle this campaign. The Gunners should have this match on their own terms and be able to secure a comfortable win.
Arsenal and Over 2.5 Goals ($2.10 at Ladbrokes)
Leeds vs Chelsea (Sunday 11pm AEST)
Leeds looked on their way to consecutive wins to start their campaign, but coughed up a two-goal lead in the second half against the Saints last weekend. Still, it’s been a promising start for them to grab four points from two matches, although it’s tough to see them improving their points total this weekend against a Chelsea side that will be desperate to record a win.
Chelsea and Over 1.5 Goals ($1.83 at Ladbrokes)
West Ham vs Brighton (Sunday 11pm AEST)
The Hammers didn’t do much wrong against Forest last weekend and could’ve easily won 4-0 had luck been on their side. They missed a penalty and had three goal line clearances against in their 1-0 loss. The Hammers will be desperate to get on the winners list this weekend and while Brighton are certainly no easy beats, I think they should be able to negotiate a win.
West Ham H2H ($2.20 at Ladbrokes)
