EPL 2022-23: Matchday 28 Preview & Betting Tips
Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle
City Ground, Saturday 18th March, 7:00am AEDT
Newcastle ended a five-game winless streak with a 2-1 win over Wolves, which saw the Magpies move back into fifth place. Newcastle are four points behind fourth placed Tottenham, but have two games in hand on Spurs, so their top four dreams are well and truly alive as long as they can take care of business. Newcastle have an excellent opportunity to keep themselves on track for a Champions League position when they take on Nottingham Forest in the opening fixture of Matchday 28.
This matchup sees two very different defensive units facing off. Newcastle possess the best defence in the Premier League having conceded only eighteen goals this season. In comparison, Nottingham Forest are the nineteenth ranked defence conceding 47 goals, including nine goals in their last three games. It’s a perfect time for this matchup to come for Newcastle who have struggled in the front third across the last month, taking on a struggling Forest defence will provide plenty of goal scoring opportunities.
Newcastle won convincingly 2-0 on the opening Matchday of the season when these two clubs last played, with the Magpies completely controlling the game. Newcastle recorded 61% possession, and had 23 shots on goal to Forest’s 5, including 10 shots on target to 0. Forest are winless in their last five games and it’s difficult to see them turning their form around against a strong Newcastle defence.

Chelsea vs Everton
Stamford Bridge, Sunday 19th March, 4:30am AEDT
Two clubs who have had incredibly disappointing seasons face off at Stamford Bridge, with Everton travelling to London to take on Chelsea. Everton picked up a desperately needed win over Brentford last week, to lift themselves out of the relegation zone. The Toffees have moved to fifteenth place, however they’re just one point away from the relegation zone and two points away from the bottom of the table.
Everton have won only one of their last four games, and had conceded eight goals in their last three games leading into Matchday 27. Chelsea have had their struggles forward of centre this season, however they were excellent in attack last week winning 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League and 3-1 against Leicester in the Premier League.
Everton have won just one of their last four Premier League fixtures against Chelsea, and coming to a venue where they’ve struggled for a long time, it doesn’t inspire much confidence for the Toffees. Everton haven’t won a Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge since 1994, with Chelsea having a serious advantage over them when they travel to London. Chelsea have begun to find some form over the last few weeks, and they’ll continue their dominance over the Toffees at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal vs Crystal Palace
Emirates Stadium, Monday 20th March, 1:00am AEDT
With Manchester City not playing this weekend, Arsenal have an opportunity to go eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table. The Gunners host Crystal Palace at the Emirates, with Palace in the midst of a horror run of form. Crystal Palace have not won a Premier League match in 2023, going 0-5-6 since the turn of the calendar year, including losing their last three games.
Palace have scored only four goals in their last eleven Premier League games, and haven’t scored a goal in their last four games. Coming up against the league’s most consistent side that ranks second in attack (62 goals scored) and second in defence (25 goals conceded), this is going to be a nightmare matchup for Patrick Viera’s side.
Arsenal have won five straight games and are firing on all cylinders having scored fifteen goals across their last five games. This fixture could get ugly very quickly for a struggling Palace outfit that is teetering towards the relegation battle if they can’t get themselves together quickly. Arsenal have been the best side in the league right from the start of the season, and against a side that haven’t won for over three months, it looms as another convincing win for the Gunners.
Arsenal -1.5

Aston Villa vs Bournemouth (Sunday 2am AEDT)
Bournemouth pulled off a shock upset win at home against Liverpool last weekend, adding three valuable points to their season tally. The Cherries climbed up to 18th on the table with the win and are now only goal difference from being outside the relegation zone. They’ll fancy their chances of making it two wins in a row when they take on an Aston Villa side that they’ve had the wood over for a number of years now. The Cherries have won four straight league matches against Villa including a 2-0 win earlier this season. They’re certainly capable of another upset win in this one.

Brentford vs Leicester (Sunday 2am AEDT)
After having their 12-game unbeaten run broken against Everton in Matchday 27, the Bees were quick to bounce back with a 2-0 win against the Saints midweek. They get the perfect opportunity to build some more momentum when they host a Leicester team that’s lost four on the spin and have only scored one goal during that span. On current form, the Bees should be far too good for the Foxes on their home deck.
Brentford to Win ($1.90 at Neds)
Southampton vs Tottenham (Sunday 2am AEDT)
Southampton weren’t able to continue their solid recent form when suffering a midweek loss to Brentford, which was their 17th loss of the season. The Saints remain on the bottom of the table but are still far from doomed. However, they’ll find it tough to get anything out of their clash against Tottenham this weekend – a team they lost to by three goals earlier this season. I expect the Spurs to be too good on this occasion.
Tottenham to Win ($1.75 at Betr)
Wolves vs Leeds (Sunday 2am AEDT)
Wolves tried hard but came away empty-handed from their trip to Newcastle last weekend. They’ve now picked up just four points from their past five league matches and now find themselves only three points ahead of the relegation zone. Still, their form in the second half of the season is a lot better than their upcoming opponents in Leeds, so you have to give the home side the slight advantage here.
