EPL 2022-23: Matchday 21 Preview & Betting Tips

Liverpool vs Chelsea

Anfield, Saturday 21st January, 11:30pm AEDT

Arguably the two most disappointing teams in the Premier League this season kick off the weekend of football at Anfield. Liverpool and Chelsea weren’t expected to be in ninth and tenth places on the Premier League table, but over halfway through the season they find themselves as mid-table sides. The Reds come into the clash on the back of consecutive defeats, after they were embarrassed 3-0 by Brighton last weekend. Chelsea had a mixed bag last week with a loss to Fulham and a win over Crystal Palace.

This fixture looms as a crucial clash for both sides as they look to get themselves in contention for a top four finish. Liverpool’s big advantage in this clash is the discrepancy between their front three and Chelsea’s attack. Both clubs have struggled in defence this season, however Liverpool have still managed to be a top five ranked attack this season with 34 goals. Chelsea rank in the bottom half of the league in scoring with just 22 goals having them ranked 13th.

In Chelsea’s last ten games they have a 2-3-5 record, and have scored only seven goals, that simply doesn’t stack up against a side with attacking quality that the Reds have. Liverpool have had the edge over Chelsea in recent seasons, with a 4-2-1 head-to-head advantage over Graham Potter’s side from their last seven Premier League fixtures. Liverpool are going to add to Chelsea’s horrible run of form with a convincing victory.

Arsenal vs Manchester United

Emirates Stadium, Monday 23rd January, 3:30am AEDT

The Emirates Stadium hosts the most important game of the season to date, with third place Manchester United heading to London to take on league leaders Arsenal. After United’s win in the Manchester Derby last week, the Gunners sit eight points clear of second placed Manchester City. The Red Devils drew against Crystal Palace on Thursday morning, which sees United and City both eight points adrift of Arsenal. If the Gunners can win this fixture, they’ll have one hand on the title.

Arsenal’s scoring capacity looms as the biggest danger for Manchester United. The Gunners are the second highest scoring team in the Premier League this season with 44 goals, 12 more goals than the Red Devils have scored this season. United couldn’t convert their dominance in general play against Crystal Palace, and the Gunners won’t give them many opportunities.

The Gunners are 10-2-0 across their last twelve games, and have barely put a foot wrong all season long. Manchester United are the only club to beat Arsenal in the Premier League this season, after a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford earlier this season. The Gunners will be desperate to make amends, and keep their stranglehold on top spot. This will be an entertaining clash, however Arsenal will rise to the challenge as they have done so all season long.

Fulham vs Tottenham

Craven Cottage, Tuesday 24th January, 7:00am AEDT

Fulham will be looking to continue their dream return season to the Premier League, with an opportunity to leapfrog Tottenham into fifth place when they host Spurs on Tuesday morning. It’s a battle of fifth versus sixth, with just two points separating the two sides. Tottenham started the season strong, but have fallen off and will be desperate to keep themselves in the hunt for a top four position.

Fulham are in a purple patch of form, winning four of their last five games as they continue to shock the league after coming up from the championship. Fulham’s two fixtures last week saw a spirited win over Chelsea and a tough 1-0 defeat to Newcastle. Fulham’s attacking game has been the key to their success, ranking eighth in the Premier League with 32 goals.

Tottenham have had the wood over Fulham, with a 14-2-1 record against Fulham in their last seventeen Premier League meetings. This fixture sees two of the better attacking sides in the league, with Tottenham being the third most prolific attacking team in the league. There will be plenty of goals on this fixture, so the result will likely come down to which defence can hold up better. Although Fulham are in excellent form, their defence is a concern, and it’s going to be too big of a task trying to contain a prolific Spurs attack.

More EPL Matchday 21 Tips

Bournemouth vs Nottingham (Sunday 2am AEDT)

Bournemouth and Nottingham may be in similar spots on the table but their form couldn’t be any more different. The Cherries have lost four on the spin without scoring a goal, while Forest have won three of their last five. It’s hard to make a case for the home side here, so we’ll be backing in Forest to continue their fine form.

Nottingham ($2.70 at Ladbrokes)

Leicester vs Brighton (Sunday 2am AEDT)

Much like the game above, Leicester and Brighton are in complete contrasting form. The Foxes have scored only once in their past four league matches and have lost all of them, while Brighton have won five of their last seven and are pushing for a top six spot. The Gulls are simply the classier outfit in this matchup and should be winning despite being on the road.

Southampton vs Aston Villa (Sunday 2am AEDT)

Southampton snapped a six-game losing streak against a fellow struggling side in Everton last weekend. The Saints were able to score multiple goals in a game for the first time since August, which tells you just how poor they’ve been in their front half. They now host Aston Villa who are winners of five of their last eight and I can’t see them having much joy against them in their current form.

West Ham vs Everton (Sunday 2am AEDT)

The Hammers immense struggles continued last weekend when they lost away to Wolves. They’ve now tasted defeat six times from their past seven league matches and are in the thick of the relegation battle as a result. Likewise, Everton are finding positive results difficult to come by and have picked up only five points from their last 11 games. Both teams have been finding it incredibly difficult to score goals, which should make for a low-scoring affair.

Crystal Palace vs Newcastle (Sunday 4:30am AEDT)

Crystal Palace were able to come away with a share of the points when they hosted Manchester United in a catchup game, which is a good result considering the Red Devils form. Still, they’ve only picked up four points from their past six matches. In contrast, Newcastle have lost one game all season and kept five clean sheets on the spin. The visitors should have it all on their terms in this one.

Leeds vs Brentford (Monday 1am AEDT)

Another loss for Leeds last start made it just two points collected from their last five matches. In fact, since starting the season with a 2-1-0 record, Leeds have picked up 10 points from 15 outings. Meanwhile, Brentford won again in Matchday 20 to make it three in a row and four from their past five. The Bees will be full of confidence heading to Leeds and are great value to come away with another win.

Manchester City vs Wolves (Monday 1am AEDT)

After the heart-breaking loss to United in the Manchester Derby, City were able to make amends with an inspired 4-2 comeback win against Tottenham. To say it was an important result is an understatement, although they still have a lot of work to do to catch the Gunners at the top. Luckily, the Citizens have an easy kill on their hands this weekend when they host the lowly Wolves. I expect this one to be all one-way traffic.

Manchester City -2.5 (2.55 at TAB)
