EPL 2022-23: Matchday 13 Preview & Betting Tips

Manchester City vs Brighton

Etihad Stadium, Sunday 23rd October, 1:00am AEDT

Manchester City’s midweek fixture against Arsenal was postponed, meaning the defending champions will have had a full week’s rest before hosting Brighton on Sunday morning. After a hot start to the season, Brighton have now gone four games without a win after a frustrating 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest during the week. The Seagulls had 19 shots to Forest’s 3, and had 71% possession, but were unable to convert their dominance on the scoreboard.

The reigning champions have dominated Brighton since their promotion to the Premier League in 2017. City are 9-0-1 in their ten Premier League games against the Seagulls since 2017, with an aggregate score of 29-6. City are the highest scoring team in the Premier League this season (33 goals) and the second best defensive outfit (10 goals conceded). Although Brighton have punched above their weight this season, they don’t have the quality to match City at either end of the pitch.

Manchester City will be desperate to bounce back after their first loss of the season against Liverpool, and after having a big advantage by not playing during the week, they’ll be fresh coming into this fixture. They’ve put up some huge score lines against Brighton in recent seasons, and you can expect a big bounce back from the defending champions.

Chelsea vs Manchester United

Stamford Bridge, Sunday 23rd October, 3:30am AEDT

The headline fixture on Matchday 13 sees Chelsea hosting Manchester United, in a battle of fourth vs fifth at Stamford Bridge. The Red Devils are coming off an impressive 2-0 win over Tottenham midweek, while Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Brentford on Thursday morning. United put up a whopping 28 shots on goal, with only a wonder game preventing a massive blowout.

This fixture sees two very different sides at the defensive end face off. Chelsea are the equal second best defence in the Premier League having conceded only 10 goals through 10 games, while Manchester United are ranked fourteenth (15 goals conceded). Chelsea have not conceded in their last three games, and the Red Devils are going to have to put up another big performance like they did on Thursday if they’re to win this game.

The last four Premier League games between these two clubs have ended in draws, however Chelsea haven’t beaten the Red Devils since 2017, with Chelsea 0-6-3 against United since their last win against them. Manchester United lift when they play against the best teams in the league, having won two of their three games against top four sides so far this season.

Tottenham vs Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Monday 24th October, 2:30am AEDT

Newcastle travel south to London with three wins from their last four games, in the midst of a six-game unbeaten run. The Magpies take on Tottenham who were soundly beaten by Manchester United during the week, with a stunning game by keeper Hugo Lloris keeping the margin somewhat respectable in the 2-0 defeat.

This game will likely be decided by the battle between Tottenham’s attacking game against Newcastle’s defence. Newcastle are the number one ranked defence in the Premier League, and Spurs are the fourth ranked attacking side in the league. Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son were nowhere to be seen against Manchester United, and they’ll need to lift if Tottenham are to win this match.

Tottenham haven’t lost back-to-back games this season, and they’ll be desperate to bounce back after a disappointing showing on Thursday morning. Spurs have had the wood over Newcastle in recent seasons, with a 7-2-1 record across their last ten Premier League meetings with Newcastle. Tottenham have been one of the best teams in the Premier League this season, and they’ll stamp their quality on this matchup with a bounce back victory.

More EPL Matchday 13 Tips

Nottingham vs Liverpool (Saturday 10:30pm AEDT)

Liverpool have found some of their better form in recent league matches, winning against City and West Ham without conceding a goal. They now get a look at the worst team in the competition in Forest who they should be dominating on Saturday night.

Liverpool -1.5 ($1.70 at Ladbrokes)

Everton vs Crystal Palace (Sunday 1am AEDT)

Just when it looked like Everton were building some momentum, they go and lose three straight league games, scoring just one goal in the process. In their defence, all three losses were against quality outfits, and they get a much easier opponent in Palace this time around.

Neither team has managed to hold down the fort on defence this season, and each of their last five league meetings have seen the Both Teams to Score market hit. I expect that trend to continue in this one.

Both Teams to Score ($1.87 at TAB)

Aston Villa vs Brentford (Monday 12am AEDT)

Steven Gerrard was sacked on the back of Villa’s 3-0 midweek loss to Fulham. With that being known, it’s strange that they’re set to start as the overwhelming favourites against a more than capable Bees outfit. I believe taking the visitors on the nose is one of the best value bets of the weekend.

Brentford H2H ($3.50 at Ladbrokes)

Leeds vs Fulham (Monday 12am AEDT)

Leeds are arguably the worst form team in the league at the moment, having secured just two points from their last seven matches. Despite that, they’ll start as favourites against a Fulham team that has already won four games and are coming off an impressive 3-0 win against Aston Villa. Again, I like the road underdogs here.

Fulham H2H ($3.60 at TAB)

Southampton vs Arsenal (Monday 12am AEDT)

The Gunners are absolutely rolling this season and just continue to find ways to win, even if they aren’t playing at their best. In contrast, the Saints snapped a streak of five games without a win when they trumped the Cherries in their most recent outing. Needless to say, the Gunners will start as the short favourites on Sunday night and should be winning this comfortably.

Arsenal -1.5 ($2.50 at Ladbrokes)

Wolves vs Leicester (Monday 12am AEDT)

The Wolves are still having an extremely tough time finding the back of the net and have done so just five times for the season to date. Couple their inability to score with the Foxes improved defence (clean sheets in three of their last four games) and you have a recipe for a low-scoring game.

Under 2.5 Goals ($1.85 at Ladbrokes)

West Ham vs Bournemouth (Tuesday 6am AEDT)

The Hammers were desperately unlucky not to come away with at least a point at Anfield midweek but will fancy their chances of getting back on the winners list when they host the Cherries on Tuesday morning. The Cherries have been in decent form lately but have already conceded 18 goals on the road this season. The Hammers should be too strong from the start here.

West Ham HT/FT ($2.25 at Ladbrokes)
