Manchester United vs Manchester City
Saturday 11:30pm AEDT, Old Trafford
The Red Devils picked up a much needed victory away at Tottenham last weekend to end their four game winless streak. Their crosstown rivals Man City suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace, ending an eight game unbeaten run in the Premier League. The season’s first Manchester Derby sees third placed City looking to gain ground on league leaders Chelsea, and fifth placed United looking to jump back into the top four. Despite United saving face last weekend, their defence in the last month has been all at sea.
The Red Devils held a clean sheet last weekend against a lackluster Tottenham, but conceded nine goals in the two games prior, and are a mid table side defensively, ranking 10th for goals conceded with 15. Coming up against the third ranked attack in Manchester City (20 goals), this out of form United defence is going to be stretched once again. If City can stop Cristiano Ronaldo, it will almost guarantee a victory. The Red Devils have an unhealthy reliance on Ronaldo who has scored 9 goals in 11 appearances in all competitions since returning to Old Trafford. Man City have been the second best defence in the league this season, conceding just six goals from ten matches.
With Ruben Dias and John Stones in central defence, they’ve got the quality to stop Ronaldo. United looked poor mid week in the Champions League, needing Ronaldo to bail them out to just claim a draw. If they play anything like that against Manchester City it will get ugly, as it did against Leicester and Liverpool. Don’t get caught up in United’s victory against a poor Tottenham, City will be far too good for them.
Everton vs Tottenham
Monday 1:00am AEDT, Goodison Park
Two teams in crisis mode face off at Goodison Park on Monday morning in a must win match for both teams. Everton have fallen into tenth on the back of three consecutive losses, and Tottenham sacked manager Nuno Espírito Santo after their horror loss to Manchester United last weekend. Former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has taken over in a huge boost for Spurs to obtain a manager of his pedigree.
After being one of the best teams in attack to start this season, Everton have scored just four goals in their last four games and just like their attack, their defence has fallen off badly too. The Toffees have conceded eight goals in their last three games, having conceded only eight goals in their first seven games. Everton’s growing injury list is a huge concern with Lucas Digne, Yerry Mina, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andre Gomes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all missing against Wolves last week and are unlikely to take on Tottenham.
Having so many key players out has hurt Everton in recent weeks, and it’s going to continue against a side they’ve struggled to beat. Tottenham holds a 5-3-1 in Premier League matches against Everton since 2017, and it looks likely that form will continue. Conte’s arrival will give Spurs a massive boost, and with the injury troubles the Toffees are facing, Tottenham should get over the line in this clash.
West Ham vs Liverpool
Monday 3:30am AEDT, London Stadium
Matchday 11 is rounded out by a massive clash between the second placed Liverpool, and fourth placed West Ham. Despite being the only team yet to lose in the Premier League this season, Liverpool will be looking to bounce back after dropping points in a disappointing 2-2 draw with Brighton last week. This game pits two of the best attacking teams in the Premier League, with plenty of goals on the cards in this clash.
Liverpool’s all conquering attack has been sensational, leading the Premier League in goals with 29 goals scored. Mo Salah ranked number one for goals (10) and second for assists (6), but it isn’t just a one man show for the Reds. Liverpool have had eight different goal scorers this season, with Sadio Mane (6 goals), Roberto Firminio (4 goals) and Diogo Jota (4 goals) all providing ample support for Salah. Liverpool’s back four are also in elite form, with the Reds possessing the third best defence in the league, conceding just eight goals from ten games this season.
West Ham have struggled badly against the Reds in recent years, with an 0-1-8 in their last nine Premier League fixtures against Liverpool. The Reds will be fired up after giving up two points last week, and will be eager to send a statement. They were outstanding mid week against Athletico Madrid, and Liverpool will continue their dominance over West Ham and return to winning ways this weekend.
