Game: Western Bulldogs Vs Essendon Bombers (Sunday, July 14th at 3.30pm AEST - Etihad Stadium)
Market: AFL Fantasy Dream Team: Ryan Griffen ($1.70) Vs. Brendon Goddard ($2.05) at Sportsbet
The Essendon Bombers will take care of the Western Bulldogs Sunday afternoon, but we are going to take a look at one of the interesting AFL Fantasy Dream Team bets on offer at Sportsbet.
It’s Ryan Griffen versus Brendon Goddard.
Griffen has been in career best form, while Goddard has been one of the most consistent players in the league, especially for a AFL Fantasy Dream Team backliner.
Obviously Griffen has been one of the best AFL Fantasy selections of the year, averaging 109.5 Dream Team (DT) points. Goddard has been similarly prolific, averaging 106.71.
The thing about Griffen is that all his form has come in the last five weeks and I would argue that he has been somewhat overhyped since his 166 Dream Team points against Port Adelaide back in Round 10. He was perhaps brought back to earth a little last week when he scored just 86 against the GWS. While Griffen did score 136 and 133 in the two weeks before that stinker against GWS, the 136 was against a poor Melbourne and his other score was when he was still on a heater.
Goddard has been crushing the last three weeks, scoring 123, 89 and 153. Those stats are similar to Griffen and in our opinion, further proof that these two players should be paying $1.90 a piece in this market. Even if that was the case though, we still might bet on Goddard and why is that? Because Goddard has a great record against the Bulldogs, while Griffen seems to struggle against the Bombers.
The last three times Griffen has met the Bombers he scored 67, 75 and 96. Over 11 games he only has an average of 71.64 DT points – which is one of Griffen’s worst opponent records in the entire AFL. Goddard on the other hand has scored 112, 120 and 119 in his last three against the Bulldogs and has a career average of 105.08 against them. We expect this sort of trend to continue.
Verdict: Usually this would be one of those tough bets that’s more or less a coin flip, but with Sportsbet giving us $2.05 on Goddard and only $1.70 on Griffin and the fact that Goddard has such a strong record against the Bulldogs, we will be happy to place a wager on Goddard.
