2024 AFL Round 19 Preview & Betting Tips
Brisbane vs Sydney
Sunday 1:10pm AEST, July 21st, Gabba
Brisbane continued their strong second-half-of-the-season form last weekend with a road win against the Eagles under tricky circumstances. Their opposition was playing in their first game since sacking their coach, and winning such teams has proven to be tough over the years.
The Lions’ 106-93 win in Perth made it six straight victories and also saw them finish the round in the top four, which is remarkable considering their horrible start to the season; the Lions lost five of their first seven games but have suffered defeat just once in their 10 games since.
Unsurprisingly, the Lions have made only the two changes at selection this week. Conor McKenna (managed) and Logan Morris (omitted) will make way for Brandon Starcevich as well as Henry Smith who will be making his AFL debut.
Meanwhile, Sydney entered their Round 18 clash under pressure for the first time this season after losing back-to-back games. They respond like a great team should and destroyed the lowly Roos by 79 points at the SCG (138-59).
Fortunately for the Swans, their recent losses didn’t do much damage on the ladder due to the chasing pack all suffering losses themselves. The Swans remain pretty at the top of the ladder and three wins clear of the next best.
Key cogs Luke Parker and Callum Mills each played their first game of the season for the red & white last weekend. Parker was used as the sub and made a fantastic impact when injected in the second half, while Mills was a tad quiet and will be managed this weekend.
Match Prediction: Due to the Lions superior form over the past six weeks they’ll start as the slight favourites to knock off the ladder-leading Swans on Sunday. However, I’m still not entirely sold on the Lions at this stage as the majority of their recent wins were against far lower-ranked clubs where they were lucky to come away with the points. Instead, I have far more faith in the Swans and considering the superb season they’ve had to date, I’m happy to take them at better than $2 odds.

Josh Dunkley 25+ Disposals – A super consistent star in the middle for the Lions. 25+ in each of his last four and three of those were over 30.
Zac Bailey Anytime Goal Scorer – He’s a big game player and regular season games don’t get too much bigger than this. I expect Bailey to be hitting the scoreboard at some stage.
Chad Warner Anytime Goal Scorer – He’s having an enormous season averaging 1.6 goals per contest and remains solid value in the goal markets.
SGM Odds: $2.80 at BoomBet
