AFL Round 19 Preview & Betting Tips
Brisbane vs Geelong
Saturday 4:35pm AEST, July 22nd, Gabba
A prelude to the top-of-the-table clash on Saturday night, Brisbane and Geelong will battle it out in a high-quality matchup at the Gabba at 4:35pm (AEST). Both teams will be desperate to secure a win for different reasons and that should make for an electric contest between two premiership contenders.
Brisbane looked as though they’d sewn up the victory away against Melbourne last weekend, but their MCG hoodoo haunted them once more as they conceded the last four goals of the match to lose by one point. Amazingly, they’ve now lost 14 of their last 15 appearances at the ‘G.
Brisbane’s contrasting home and away form remains baffling. They’ve looked sensational in front of their home fans at the Gabba where they’ve won all eight of their matches, including wins over the likes of Collingwood and Melbourne. However, on the road they’ve lost three of their last four which includes a 25-point defeat against the 16th placed Hawks.
Geelong had an indifferent start to their premiership defence, losing their opening three matches as well as six of their first 11. The champs have responded since the halfway mark of the season however, and enter this weekend with a 3-1-0 record across their past four matches, including two wins against top eight clubs.
Much like the Lions, the Cats still need to prove their form on the road in 2023. They’ve been fantastic when playing at the Cattery where they’ve registered wins in five out of six attempts, but away from there they’ve won only four of their 11 matches.
With both sides displaying elite form at their home ground and struggling on the road, it makes sense for the Lions to be priced as favourites for their Round 19 encounter. The line is currently sitting at 12.5 at the time of writing, which is a margin the Lions have covered in each of their last seven home fixtures. With that in mind, I’m happy to back the trend and take the lions at the line.

Brisbane to Win – Undefeated at home this season and most of their wins have been comfortable. Happy to have them in my SGM.
Jack Gunston 2+ Goals – Has found some great form since coming back into the side. I’m expecting plenty of goals in this match and Gunston should be amongst them.
Tyson Stengle 1+ Goals – A slow first half of the season for Stengle but he’s lifted of late. Confident he’ll kick at least one here.
Will Ashcroft 20+ Disposals – Neale almost certainly gets tagged, and Dunkley is coming back from injury. Ashcroft will need to step up and play big midfield minutes.
