BBL13 FANTASY TIPS: RENEGADES VS HURRICANES
Renegades Squad: Jordan Cox, Quinton de Kock, Harry Dixon, Aaron Finch, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Mackenzie Harvey, Ruwan Kellapotha, Nic Maddinson (c), Shaun Marsh, Fergus O'Neill, Kane Richardson, Tom Rogers, Peter Siddle, Will Sutherland, Jonathan Wells, Adam Zampa
Hurricanes Squad: Nathan Ellis, Corey Anderson, Nikhil Chaudhary, Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Sam Hain, Caleb Jewell, Chris Jordan, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitchell Owen, Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade, Mac Wright
The Melbourne Renegades are just about out of finals contention after losing a fifth game to the Stars on Tuesday.
Batting first in a rain-effected Melbourne Derby, the Renegades failed to build any momentum as they stumbled to 7/97 off 14 overs.
The Stars piled on the pain further with the bat, chasing down the target for the loss of just two wickets as the Renegades struggled without frontline spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
The lack of a second spinner could also be an issue on Thursday, although Hobart’s bowlers have equally failed to fire in BBL13.
Despite that, the Hurricanes are still relatively well placed in fifth, and they will be confident ahead of this fixture.
Spinners Paddy Dooley and Nikhil Chaudhary set the scene for a comprehensive win against the Sydney Thunder on Monday, taking two wickets each as the Hurricanes restricted Sydney to 151.
In reply, Ben McDermott (53*), Mac Wright (34) and Caleb Jewell (31) made light work of the chase.
Hurricanes faithful will be encouraged by the performances of McDermott and Dooley – those two have been below their best in BBL13 but perhaps the tide is beginning to turn.
With a strong squad to choose from on Thursday, all signs point towards another Hobart victory.
Fantasy Plays
Love It – Ben McDermott ($14,500)
McDermott has had a difficult campaign so far, missing games due to injury as well as struggling for form. However, the BBL star rediscovered his form against the Thunder on Monday, smashing 54 runs to top 80 DFS points. Incredibly, McDermott averages 75 at Marvel Stadium including two centuries, so the matchup is right here for him to continue his resurgence on Thursday.
Love It – Nikhil Chaudhary ($12,500)
This BBL newcomer has been one of the finds of the tournament so far. Joining the Hurricanes out of grade cricket, Chaudhary has impressed with his middle order hitting, reliable catching and handy leg-spin, averaging nearly 50 DFS points. Marvel is generally a spinners paradise, so I expect Chaudhary to enjoy plenty of opportunity on Thursday.
Don’t Love It – Riley Meredith ($14,300)
Like McDermott, Meredith has struggled in an injury interrupted start to BBL13. The Hobart speedster is yet to find his best coming off a side strain, averaging just 24 DFS points, and outright pace is rarely the best weapon when bowling at Marvel. Until Meredith’s price tag comes down, I’m unlikely to roster him.
Don’t Love It – Jordan Cox ($8,800)
As a bargain priced opening batter, Cox will continue to garner high ownership numbers on Draftstars. However, he has been very scratchy in two previous innings, doing little to suggest a breakout performance is around the corner. For that reason, I’m happy to fade and find value elsewhere.
Who Knows – Quinton De Kock ($16,500)
De Kock’s output has been all over the place during his stint at the Renegades, and we are yet to see a truly dominant performance from the dynamic South African. With that said, DFS scores of 63, 31 and 25 suggest that a big return could be imminent, especially considering De Kock’s time in Melbourne is nearing its end.
