Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder
Blundstone Arena, Monday 1st January, 4:00pm AEDT
Hobart Hurricanes
Predicted XI: Matthew Wade, Caleb Jewell, Mac Wright, Sam Hain, Corey Anderson, Tim David, Nikhil Chaudhary, Chris Jordan, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith
The Hurricanes fell to the third loss in four games after squandering a golden opportunity in a seven wicket loss against the Melbourne Stars on Friday night. With the Stars chasing an adjusted 67 off seven overs, the Hurricanes looked in the box seat when the Stars fell to 3/6 after 1.4 overs. However the Canes then conceded 52 runs off the next 20 balls as the game completely swung on the back of some poor bowling by the men in purple.
The Hurricanes have had some great production out of Mac Wright (96 runs at an average of 48) and Caleb Jewell (99 runs at 24), which has given the upside of more depth in the Hurricanes batting stocks when one of their star batsmen do fire. As they did in their win over the Renegades on Christmas Eve, if one of Matthew Wade or Tim David can fire alongside the unheralded players, the Canes are capable of producing big scores.
After being one of the most consistent bowling attacks across the past few seasons, the Hurricanes have leaked runs at an alarming rate in BBL13. The Canes have conceded 562 runs from 62 overs this season, an average economy rate of 9.06 per over. The four bowlers that have bowled at least seven overs for the Hurricanes this season, have all conceded above 8.27 runs per over. Englishman Chris Jordan is doing his bit to keep the Hurricanes import curse alive, having taken just one wicket at an average of 120, with an economy rate of 10.58.
Sydney Thunder
Predicted XI: Alex Hales, Cameron Bancroft, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Oliver Davies, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Nathan McAndrew, Chris Green, Gurinder Sandhu, Liam Hatcher, Tanveer Sangha
The Thunder were bailed out by the rain as their clash with the Sixers was abandoned after four overs into the Sixers innings. The Sixers had already achieved the DLS target score that they required by the 5th over, however as the fifth over wasn’t bowled a result couldn’t be constituted.
Once again the Thunder’s batting unit struggled, with the Thunder falling to 4/54 on Saturday night before Alex Ross (44) and Daniel Sams (34) helped the Thunder reach a respectable but under par 7/151. Outside of their 7/200 in a defeat to the Adelaide Strikers, the Thunder have produced some ordinary batting performances with scores of 131, 5/176 (18 overs), 9/157 and 7/151.
The inclusion of Tom Kohler-Cadmore should help the Thunder’s batting stocks for the remainder of the tournament, however with Daniel Sams and Nathan McAndre occupying positions six and seven in the batting order, the Thunder lack genuine batting depth. Cameron Bancroft is the only Thunder batsman averaging above 27.
Match Prediction
Both sides have struggled out the gates in BBL13, with the Hurricanes at 1-3 and the Thunder at 1-1-3, which makes it difficult to pick either side with any confidence. However the upside in the Hurricanes is significantly better than the Thunder, given they bat right through seven with genuine batters, then topped off with Chris Jordan’s power hitting at number eight.
Matthew Wade has only got going in one of his three games this season, while Tim David is yet to score above 12. For the Hurricanes struggles this season has come from their better players not hitting form, unlike the Thunder who simply don’t have enough genuine batters to produce match winning scores. The Hurricanes have won seven of their nine games at Blundstone Arena against the Thunder, and will breathe life into their season with a win over the Thunder.
