The second match of Saturday’s BBL11 double header takes us to the rather tropical C.ex Coffs International Stadium in Coffs Harbour for the Sydney Sixers against the Melbourne Renegades. It’s top versus bottom in a potentially lop-sided contest, but the BBL is always capable of throwing up surprises.
The action kicks off at 7:30pm AEDT and you can follow our BBL11 tips in our Sixers vs Renegades preview below.
BBL11 Sixers vs Renegades Betting Tips
Coffs Harbour, Saturday 7:30pm AEDT
Sydney Sixers
Likely XI: Josh Philippe, James Vince, Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Jordan Silk, Dan Christian, Sean Abbott, Hayden Kerr, Shadab Khan, Ben Dwarshius, Lloyd Pope
The two-time defending champions are back on top of the pile on the BBL11 ladder, but they probably feel a little fortunate to be there. The Scorchers dropped a game they were expected to win, and then the Sixers got out of jail to get the points against the Heat on Wednesday night. After rolling the Heat for just 105, the Sixers slumped to 7-35 and were in a world of trouble. Enter Sean Abbott who backed up his four wickets with an epic innings to see the Sixers home off the final ball! Abbott also landed a run out and two catches, including a classic one-hander to dismiss Chris Lynn, so the Sixers can be very thankful for his contributions!
It was a bad game for the rest of them, but otherwise the Sixers have been very clinical this season. Josh Philippe and Moises Henriques have led the way with the bat, while Ben Dwarshius, Hayden Kerr and of course, Sean Abbott, have been solid with the ball. Perhaps the question mark is over the spin department after first choice spinner Steve O’Keefe went down with injury. They have pulled in Pakistani Shadab Khan however Lloyd Pope is still filling the lineup, despite only bowling one over last match. They don’t have a lot in terms of replacements, so Pope will probably hold his spot for now, but he is the vulnerable link in the chain that the Renegades should look to exploit.
Melbourne Renegades
Likely XI: Sam Harper, Aaron Finch, McKenzie Harvey, Jake Fraser-McGurk, James Seymour, Mohammad Nabi, Jack Prestwidge, James Pattinson, Kane Richardon, Reece Topley, Zahir Khan
The Renegades are again on the bottom of the BBL ladder and on their way to a third consecutive wooden spoon. I actually have the answer for the Renegades - it’s time to play youth. A top four of Harper, McKenzie, Fraser-McGurk and Seymour is an exciting one, and sets them up for the future. Bat Aaron Finch at five, but only if he’s 100% fit, and then Nic Maddinson can hang on at number six. I like that batting line up and it releases the young guys to play with freedom at the top of the order.
That would leave Mohammad Nabi on the sidelines but he’s done nothing with bat or ball this season, and at 36 years of age, I have no place for him in this team any longer. Another for the retirement home is 38-year old Shaun Marsh who is waiting in the wings to return to the side from a severe hamstring injury. Why bring him back to take the place of a talented young kid? Doesn’t make sense to me. It’s time to move on.
Jack Prestwidge has shown enough to think that he’s a useful cricketer and probably adds more value than Will Sutherland, but if we’re nurturing youth then there’s argument to play both.
Kane Richardson picks himself, Reece Topley has done enough and Zahir Khan is their best spinner. So the unpopular take is that James Pattinson needs to deliver more. He supposedly gave up his Test career to play here but so far he’s conceded 27 runs (4 overs), 27 (3), 39 (4), 35 (3) and 31 (3) to go with a career economy of 8.50. It’s loose and it’s wild and it’s not doing any damage at all. It’s ok to be attacking if you’re taking wickets but he’s only taken 3 wickets in five matches in BBL11. Will Sutherland has that many! For me, Pattinson, at 31 years of age and injury prone, is the one under pressure to lift.
Note: Nic Maddinson has been called into the Test squad for cover after Travis Head tested positive for COVID. Expect Seymour to get another opportunity.
Match Prediction
Sixers easily. Renegades are a rabble and Sixers just don’t like to lose. Can you make an argument for an upset? I can’t at all. The price is short but you could argue it’s actually value. Multi with the Hurricanes earlier in the day if you want a bit more bang for your buck.
