AFLW Round 3 Betting Tips

Geelong vs North Melbourne

Friday 5:05pm AEST, GMHBA Stadium

Round Three kicks off with a top four clash as Geelong hosts North Melbourne on Friday evening. North Melbourne sit atop the AFLW ladder after kicking off their season with wins by 40 and 60 points, with the Cats also 2-0 after convincing wins over the Bulldogs and Sydney. The Kangaroos held Carlton scoreless until the twelve minute mark of the final quarter, in what was an absolute annihilation. The Roos have the two leading disposal getters in the AFLW in Ash Riddell (32.5) and Jasmine Garner (32.5) starting the season on an absolute tear.

Geelong were lauded for being one of the best defensive sides in the competition in Season 7, however it’s their attacking game that is making headlines in the opening fortnight of this season. The Cats have kicked ten goals in both of their games so far, after only hitting that mark twice in the entirety of last season. Chloe Scheer has been the spearhead up forward for Geelong, kicking five goals in the win over the Swans to sit second on the leading goal kicker list.

It can’t be understated how dominant North Melbourne’s start to the season has been. The Kangaroos have conceded just three goals this season, and are yet to trail at any stage of a game. The Roos have had the wood over Geelong, winning all five meetings between the two sides. North Melbourne will continue their hot start to 2023 and will be too strong for the Cats on Friday evening.

Adelaide vs Essendon

Saturday 3:05pm AEST, Wigan Oval

Saturday afternoon football kicks off with another clash between two unbeaten sides, as Adelaide take on Essendon. Adelaide are sitting third on the ladder after a dominant performance in a 29 point win over Richmond, led by Ebony Marinof’s 23 disposals and 15 tackles. Adelaide dominated the territory battle on the back of winning the disposal count by 73, the inside 50’s by 24 and the contested possession battle by 9. It was a statement performance by the Crows on the road, after the Tigers upset Brisbane in Round One.

The Bombers managed to get over the line once again to make it back to back wins to start the season, with a gritty twelve point win over St Kilda. Once again the Bombers were led by superstar Maddy Prespakis who recorded 29 disposals, with the former league best & fairest winning averaging the third most disposals in the competition. Essendon started on fire with three unanswered goals to begin the game, however the Bombers struggled to run out the game kicking just three goals over the remaining three quarters.

This is the first time Essendon have matched up against the Crows, and if they were to pull off an upset, it would be their best victory since entering the competition. The Dons finished tenth last season, but haven’t beaten a side that finished above them. The Bombers are capable of taking care of the sides that aren’t as good as them, however they struggle coming up against the better sides in the competition. Essendon lost by 44 and 41 points against Melbourne and Brisbane last season, and it’s difficult to see them keeping it close against Adelaide.

Adelaide -24.5

Melbourne vs Western Bulldogs

Saturday 3:05pm AEST, Casey Fields

The two originating clubs of the competition continue their rivalry on Saturday afternoon when they face off at Casey Fields. It’s been a contrasting start for both clubs, with Melbourne starting 2-0 and the Bulldogs sitting at 0-2. The Dogs backed their eight goal loss in Round One with a seven point loss to Hawthorn, as the Bulldogs conceded the last three goals of the game.

The Demons are second on the ladder after a 77 point smashing of GWS, on the back of their 43 point win over Collingwood in Round One. Melbourne are the highest scoring team in the competition with scores of 99 and 73 to start the season. Kate Hore and Alyssa Bannan have both kicked six goals this season, as the Demons forward line has lived up to preseason expectations.

Although the line is large in this clash, it’s clear that Melbourne are on a completely another level compared to the Bulldogs. Melbourne registered 24 scoring shots from 43 inside 50’s last week, and if they produce a similarly efficient performance inside 50, it’s going to be ugly for the Dogs. The Dees have won their last two games against the Bulldogs by an average margin of 44 points, and will continue their dominant start to 2023.

Melbourne -44.5

More AFLW Round 3 Tips

GWS vs Richmond - Blacktown ISP, Saturday 1:05pm AEST

It’s been a brutal start to the season for the Giants with a 77 point loss to Melbourne consigning GWS to sixteenth on the ladder. Richmond will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing performance against the Crows, and will be too good for a Giants backline that is leaking scores at an alarming rate.

Tip: Richmond -15.5, $1.88 with Ladbrokes

Fremantle vs Hawthorn - Fremantle Community Bank Oval, Saturday 5:05pm AEST

Arguably the toughest game of the weekend to pick, with both sides 1-1 after the opening fortnight. The Dockers have been unconvincing so far, still struggling to score, and this will likely be a low scoring affair. The Hawks stormed home last week against the Bulldogs, and are primed to cause an upset on the road.

Tip: Hawthorn, $2.30 with Ladbrokes

St Kilda vs Port Adelaide - RSEA Park, Sunday 1:05pm AEST

St Kilda and Port Adelaide will have an opportunity to pick up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon. The Saints were much better in Round 2 against Essendon, with their defensive structure containing Essendon across the final three quarters. If the Saints can continue that form, they’ll be too strong for a young Port side coming off a 50 point loss.

Tip: St Kilda -11.5, $1.88 with Ladbrokes

West Coast vs Carlton - Mineral Resources Park, Sunday 3:05pm AEST

Both clubs will be eager to respond after copping massive losses in Round 2, with the Eagles losing by 73 and the Blues losing by 60. After Round One it looked like West Coast had made some improvement, however it’s clear after last week they’re still in for plenty of pain this season.

Tip: Carlton -11.5, $1.88 with Ladbrokes

Collingwood vs Gold Coast - Victoria Park, Sunday 3:05pm AEST

Collingwood and Gold Coast both recorded convincing wins last week, and will face off in a crucial clash with both teams vying for a top eight position in 2023. Although the Suns were dominant last week, it’s difficult to take much out of a win against West Coast. Collingwood have been tough to beat at home, and will move to 2-1 on the back of their midfield.

Tip: Collingwood -7.5, $1.90 with Ladbrokes

Brisbane vs Sydney - Brighton Homes Arena, Sunday 5:05pm AEST

Brisbane bounced back from a shock loss in Round One with a 50 point smashing of Port Adelaide at Alberton, and will be eyeing off another big win when they face the Swans. Sydney were brave against Geelong, but still went down by 27 points, and it’s difficult to see them being competitive against the Lions.

Tip: Brisbane -33.5, $1.90 with Ladbrokes
