PGA Tour: John Deere Classic Betting Tips
TPC Deere Run, Thursday 4th - Sunday July 7th July
Every week, it seems that Scottie Scheffler is either winning or right in the finish for every PGA event. He isn't playing this week, so the door is open for someone to get a tour victory and get some potential momentum heading into The Open, which begins in the not too distant future.
A host of quality players are set to their place, notably Jordan Spieth, who is favourite in early markets for the event given he has won it twice previously.
The Field
It's not the deepest field re depth/quality, but there is still some level of star play. As mentioned, the highlighted player is Jordan Spieth, a major winner who has won this event twice previously and despite struggles to get tournament wins, his ever reliable short game is there. Sepp Straka won the event last year and he is back to try and win it again.
There are a host of previous winners set to take their place this week, including Spieth, Straka, Lucas Glover, Dylan Frittelli and Michael Kim.
The Course
TPC Deere Run is an 18 hole course, which has a total distance of 7258 yards (6637 metres). Par for the course is 71 and across the eighteen holes, there are three Par 5's, four Par 3's and 11 Par 4's. Traditionally, low scoring is prevalent in this tournament so expect low numbers and a lot of birdies, especially on the front nine.
Over the last 10 editions of this tournament, -20 or better has been the winning score on seven occasions. Michael Kim went -27 when winning in 2018, winning by a massive eight strokes.
Betting Tips
Sungjae Im ($15/Top 20 $1.83 at Betfair)
He opened 2024 with below average performances and it looked as if he would be going downhill for the year but thankfully for him he has turned the corner, finishing top 12 in five of his past seven tournaments, which does include missing the cut at the US Open and PGA Championship, but he is a golfer who can score low, which is ideal for this tournament.
Keith Mitchell ($26/Top 20 $2.25 at Betfair)
The course is one where ball striking with the irons is a must, and Mitchell is one of the more accurate players on tour in that area. The 32-year-old enters this tournament ranked seventh in the PGA in strokes gained: approach to green (0.643) and eighth in greens in regulation percentage (69.93%). He's also been effective off the tee, ranking fourth in strokes gained: off the tee (0.768) and 12th in driving distance (309.9). Those numbers suggest he'll give this tournament a shake.
Neal Shipley ($67/Top 20 $3.75)
He made his first start as a Pro at Detroit and didn't disgrace himself at all, finishing 20th, after strong efforts in The Masters and US Open. He is a rising star and as stated a few times, the field for this tournament isn't overly deep. You don't need to put on much for a decent collect and I think you'll get a run for your money with this aspiring golfer who has hunger and a want to perform well.
