AFL Collingwood vs Port Adelaide Tips
MCG, Sunday 23th May 3:20pm (AEST)
This intriguing Sunday afternoon clash is between two sides coming off losses in Round 9, which should add a bit of extra spice into the contest. Clearly, the Magpies are struggling this season with just a couple of wins to their name and they’ll start as the big underdogs the Power as a result.
Match Prediction
Collingwood got off to a hot start in their away game against the Swans in Round 9 and took a three-goal lead into the first break; however, they managed just two goals in the final three quarters and went down by five goals at full time. It’s been a really tough start to the year for the Magpies and things are seemingly only getting worse. They’re now 2-7 on the season and are 16th on the ladder.
The Magpies don’t have the longest of injury lists at the moment, but some of the guys on the sidelines are crucial to their success. They’ll remain without gun midfielder Taylor Adams (1-2 weeks) and small forward Jamie Elliott (2-3 weeks) in the short time, while Jeremy Howe (8-14 weeks) continues to rehab his bad hamstring injury that could potentially keep him out for the remainder of the season.
Port Adelaide were beaten up on their home deck by the Western Bulldogs last weekend, losing from wire-to-wire despite starting the game as favourites. They only ended up losing the contested possession stat 136-147, but a lot of the damage was done early and caused the Power to exert a lot of energy trying to get back into the contest. Their Round 9 loss to the Bulldogs was the Power’s first home defeat of the season and third overall against six wins.
The Power have one of the more extensive injury lists in the competition after nine rounds. Furth complications to Zak Butters injured leg means we won’t be seeing him anytime soon, while Xavier Duursma (8-10 weeks), Tom Rockliff (TBC), Scott Lycett (3 weeks), and Tom Clurey (6 weeks) will also spend a lot more time watching from the stands. On a positive note, Dan Houston and Lachie Jones are both a chance to get back on the field this weekend.
There’s been plenty of back-and-forth going on between these clubs off the field this season, which just might add a little extra feeling to the contest on Sunday. In terms of recent dominance in the head-to-head, it was the Power who came out on top in their only 2020 meeting, but prior to that the Magpies were big winners in 2018 and 2019 when they were of course a much better on field unit.
The Magpies look to be going with the youthful approach this season and that’s led to enormous inconsistency from a game-to-game and even a quarter-to-quarter basis. On the other hand, the Power believe they’re in the sweet spot for a premiership tilt, but were bullied by the Bulldogs last weekend in what was a bit of a reality check. In saying that, the Power still put up a solid fight for the most part and have the perfect opportunity to bounce back with a big win over the struggling Magpies. We have the Power winning this by 5+ goals on a ground they love playing at.
TIP: Port Adelaide Power -20.5 (2 Units)
Same Game Multi
Like all games in Round 10, we’ve opted to have a crack at a well-researched Same Game Multi that will include 3+ legs and total a value of at least $2. There looks to be plenty of value in this game in particular, especially if you’re having a punt at Sportsbet.
Firstly, Connor Rozee is as fast as anyone in the competition and will love the open spaces on the MCG. He’s kicked at least one goal in all three games against bottom 10 opposition this season and should continue that form here as our anytime goal scorer. Secondly, Brayden Maynard has returned to his 2020 form with 29 and 32 disposals in his last two games. He’s returned to his kick-in duties and there should be plenty of those on offer if the Power get on top like we think they will. Finally, Karl Amon has transformed into one of the elite wingers in the competition and is in career-best form this season. He’s collected 20+ disposals in each of his last eight games and should find plenty of space on the wings at the ‘G.
Rozee Anytime Goal Scorer ($1.57)
Maynard 20+ Disposals ($1.28)
Amon 20+ Disposals ($1.33)
