AFL Round 10 Thursday Betting Tips
Collingwood vs Sydney
Gabba, Thursday 5.40pm (AEST)
The Swans will be counting down the days until the 2020 season is over and they can push the reset button. Nothing has really gone right for them this year and you can’t blame them for wanting to pack it up now and play for a high draft pick. Their best three players in Lance Franklin, Josh Kennedy and Isaac Heeney are all out with long term injuries and they are just 3-6 on the season and sit in 17th place.
The Magpies were pretty woeful in their Round 9 loss to the Dockers, going down by 12 points in a game where they were heavily favoured. Adam Treloar continues to be a standout in the midfield for the Pies but they are desperate for the return of skipper Scott Pendlebury, who unfortunately wont return to the side on Thursday night.
The Pies start as pretty heavy favourites here but its hard to like the way they are playing at the moment. There’s no doubt they will trot out a better side on paper than Sydney is able to on Thursday night, and we do think they win, but we like the 1-39 margin more than the line here. The Swans have been beaten by more than 39 points just once this season and that was against a rampant Saints side.
Gold Coast vs St. Kilda
Metricon Stadium, Thursday 8.10pm
The Saints are one of the in-form teams in the competition at the moment after back to back wins over the two Adelaide teams followed by a massive win over Sydney on the weekend. All of their off-season recruits are playing a massive role in the side but it’s more tenured Saints in Rowan Marshall and Jack Steele that have gone to the next level, making the Saints look like the real deal for the first time in almost a decade.
The Saints score more goals per game than any side in the competition at 11.3 and have the best conversion rate of inside 50s to scores, highlighting the dynamic blend of tall and small forwards they possess. They also have a really strong looking injury list, so good in fact that stalwarts in the likes of Jimmy Webster, Dylan Roberton and Nathan Brown can’t even get a look in at selection. Ben Long looks likely to return to the line-up this week after a lengthy suspension.
If the Saints play to 75% of the level they have been over the last three weeks, we still think they should be too strong for the Suns here. The Suns list is probably at the same stage St. Kilda’s was a few years ago, so there’s a lot to be excited about, but the Saints should be too fast and strong here. The Saints have won their last four games on the trot against Gold Coast and we expect that streak to continue Thursday night.
