A-League Matchweek 5 Betting Tips
Sydney FC vs Central Coast Mariners
Friday 22nd Jan, 7:05pm AEDT
Sydney FC kicked their season off with a win over Wellington, but weren’t able to go on with it against the Wanderers last weekend, which was their fifth straight derby without a win. Sydney have been solid defensively through two games but haven’t quite been able to click in attack despite averaging 16.5 shots at goal per game.
Central Coast Mariners got off to their hottest start to the season in a number of years, winning their opening two matches without conceding a goal. They came back to earth a touch last time out against the Wanderers however, losing 1-0 at home despite having double the number of attempts at goal.
It’s no surprise that the Mariners have struggled against Sydney in recent years considering the contrasting successes of both clubs. Sydney have won five of the past six matches in this fixture and two of their past four have been by 3+ goals. While the Mariners do look like they’ve improved a touch this season, they’re still nowhere near the level of the champs. We have Sydney winning this by 2+ goals at juicy odds.
Western United vs Perth Glory
Saturday 23rd Jan, 5:05pm AEDT
Western United are coming off a fantastic inaugural A-League campaign, but they’re yet to show the further improvement many expected from them, albeit only two games into their new campaign. They kicked things off with a cagey 0-0 draw against Adelaide in Round 1 and had to wait until Round 4 for their second match, which was a 2-1 loss against Melbourne City.
Perth Glory finally got their 2021 campaign underway on the weekend and it was a performance that was certainly worth the wait. Glory came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders to pile on five goals against Adelaide, but would be a bit disappointed to concede two late ones to finish up 5-3 winners.
Both of these clubs have plenty of fire power and we’re expecting this to be another attacking game featuring Perth Glory. The Both Teams to Score & Over 2.5 Goals market saluted in both United and Glory’s Round 4 fixtures; we’re expecting more of the same this weekend.

Wellington Phoenix vs Newcastle Jets
Sunday 24th Jan, 6:05pm AEDT
Wellington Phoenix have only played two matches so far this season, one in Round 2 and one in Round 3. Their first was a tough 2-1 loss against Sydney in a game where they could’ve easily won if the ball bounced their way; the second was a 1-1 draw away to a pretty handy Macarthur outfit.
Newcastle Jets had a horror off-season and that’s well and truly translated into their play on the pitch in the early part of the season. They’re one of just three teams that have featured in all four rounds, yet they still sit on the bottom of the ladder with 0 points to their name. Each of their last three matches have also been on their home deck, with their most recent being a 2-1 defeat to Brisbane Roar.
Neither side has won a game in 2020, but Wellington have certainly been the better of the two with less opportunities. With an extra week to recover and up against currently the worst team in the competition in our opinion, we have Phoenix earning their first win of the season.
