A-League Round 2 Betting Tips
Wellington Phoenix vs Sydney FC
Wollongong Showground, Saturday 5pm AEDT
Wellington will be looking to build on an impressive 2019-20 campaign in which they finished third on the ladder. They’ve made plenty of changes in the off-season but have brought back the baulk of their key players, which should have them in good stead.
Sydney FC are coming off another title-winning season and will bring back nearly an identical roster. One loss that could hurt them is Adam Le Fondre up front, but they still have plenty of quality players in attack that it shouldn’t matter too much.
Both teams had strong 2019-20 seasons and will be looking for more of the same in 2020-21. First up it’s really hard to go past Sydney on a neutral ground, especially with their squad being near identical to last season. We’re keen on taking them at around $2 to get the job done.
Macarthur vs Central Coast Mariners
Campbelltown Stadium, Sunday 4pm AEDT
Macarthur got off to a winning start in their inaugural A-League season with a 1-0 win against the Wanderers. Mark Milligan was the man with the winning goal in the 72nd minute in what was a great match despite the lack of goals. They’ll look to make it 2/2 when they play their first home fixture in the competition.
The Mariners also got their campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory at home against the Jets. It was their first win at home in over a year and one that they’ll hope can give them some early momentum after a couple of really tough years in the league.
Both teams will be thrilled with their first match and will be desperate to go on with it in Round 2. Surprisingly, the Mariners haven’t gotten any respect from the bookies after their win over the Jets, with Macarthur starting this match as very short favourites. We don’t agree with the pricing and believe the Mariners are a genuine winning chance if they can play like they did in Round 1, but will play it safer by taking them to win or draw at nice odds.

Adelaide United vs Melbourne City
Hindmarsh, Sunday 6pm AEDT
Adelaide United played their part in a goalless draw against Western United in the first match of the season. It was certainly a more exciting game than the score line suggests and Adelaide would count themselves very unlucky not to have won after creating plenty of genuine chances on goal.
Melbourne City were slow starters in their opening match against Brisbane, but kicked into gear after half time and ended up securing all three points courtesy of a classy Connor Metcalfe goal. It’s a positive start on the road for City, particularly after the disappointment of last season’s Grand Final loss.
Both teams were solid in their first outing but Melbourne City certainly have the most upside of the two clubs. Jamie Maclaren looked dangerous without scoring in Round 1 and as long as they play like they did in the second half of their recent match, then they should have too much firepower for their opponents to handle.
