2019 UEFA Super Cup Betting Tips
Liverpool vs Chelsea (Thursday 5am AEST)
This year’s UEFA Super Cup will be the 44th time it’s been held since it was created in 1971. It’s played between the winner of the UEFA Champions League and the winner of the UEFA Europa league, which, last year, were Liverpool and Chelsea, respectively.
Liverpool
As we all know, Liverpool became last season’s UEFA Champions League winners when they defeated Tottenham in the final at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, Spain. Becoming the champions of Europe was a fitting way to cap off an historic season for the Reds who had just been pipped by Manchester City on the last EPL matchday.
Liverpool played their first competitive game of the new season against Manchester City in the FA Community Shield a couple of weeks back, losing on penalties. Their EPL campaign also got underway last weekend against the newly promoted Norwich City who they dispatched in really comfortable fashion (4-1) after four first half goals.
Chelsea
Last year wasn’t the greatest season for the boys in blue, but they still ended up with some silverware that most English football clubs can only dream of. They were named the UEFA Europa League champions after they defeated Arsenal 4-1 in the final at Olympic Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Chelsea finished in third position on the table in the EPL last season but look like a side that will go nowhere near that feat this year if their first match is any indication. They were absolutely thumped to the tune of 4-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on the weekend, which was worst possible start for new manager Frank Lampard.
History
Being the English rivals that they are, Liverpool and Chelsea face each other at least two times per season in their domestic league. Here’s how their last five meetings have panned out:
15/4/19 – Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea
30/9/19 – Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool
7/5/18 – Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool
26/11/17 – Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea
1/2/17 – Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea
Prediction
While history may suggest that playing the under 2.5 goals market is the best way to attack this fixture, we believe we’ve seen enough of these teams lately to suggest this trend won’t continue. Liverpool have one of the most potent and formidable group of attacking players in the world and they’re coming off a match in which they banged in four first half goals. On the other hand, Chelsea conceded four goals in their last match and look the weakest they’ve been in a very, very long time. There’s little to no value in backing Liverpool to win, but if you take them with the Over 2.5 Goals double, then you’ve got yourself some really nice value in our opinion.
