AFL Round 14 Sydney vs Hawthorn Betting Tips
Friday 7:50pm AEST, SCG
We’ve got another cracking match on our hands in Round 14 with two old rivals in Sydney and Hawthorn going head-to-head once more in a really important fixture. Both teams are in desperate need of a win to stay in touch with the top eight, which should make it a great contest to kickstart the weekend.
Sydney Swans
The Swans will be fresh on Friday night after a week off in Round 13 with a bye. Prior to their rest they produced their best performance of the season with a dominant performance against the Eagles at the SCG, defeating them reigning premiers by 45 points. A lot of key Swans had huge games, highlighted by Jake Lloyd’s 42 disposals and 149 fantasy point. Buddy Franklin and Tom Papley were a dominant duo in front of goal with five majors each.
That huge win for the Swans in Round 12 keeps their finals hopes alive, at least for the time being. They’ve now won three of their past five games to hold a season record of 4-8, which has them in 15thspot on the ladder. There’s still a large mountain to climb for the Swans if they want to feature in September, although they’ve shown us multiple times that they’re willing and capable.
Hawthorn Hawks
The Hawks were bitterly disappointing in their Round 13 loss to the Bombers at Marvel Stadium. A lot of punters expected them to come out of the blocks firing after a week off in Round 12, although that wasn’t to be the case as they fell by 19 points. Dominating possession certainly wasn’t an area they were poor in as four Hawks collected 31+ disposals in the loss. Kicking goals, on the other hand, was a major issue, with just one Hawk (Jarman Impey) finishing with multiple majors.
Hawthorn are now in serious danger of seeing their finals hopes slip away in season 2019. They’ve lost three of their last four games and now boast a poor 5-7 record for the season, which has them in 12thspot on the ladder. It’s going to take a big effort for the Hawks to get back on track, but luckily for them they have one of the greatest coaches of all time in Alistair Clarkson.
History
The Hawks have quite a dominant lead in the head-to-head against the Swans since 1980, winning 46 of the 72 fixtures they’ve played. They’ve also had the upper hand in recent times with four wins from their past five meetings, although all four Hawthorn wins have been by less than 10 points. Interestingly, this will be the one and only regular season meeting between these sides this year, which is the first time that’s been the case since 2008.
Last five meetings:
2018 R23 – Sydney (74) lost to Hawthorn (83)
2018 R8 – Hawthorn (71) lost to Sydney (79)
2017 R19 – Hawthorn (72) defeated Sydney (66)
2017 R10 – Sydney (75) lost to Hawthorn (81)
2016 R17 – Sydney (70) lost to Hawthorn (75)
Prediction
This is must-win game for both teams in order to maintain a realistic chance of playing finals. The Swans would fall to 4-9 if they were to lose, while the Hawks would fall to 5-8 with four really tough fixtures to follow (Eagles, Magpies, Dockers, Cats).
The Bookies have priced the Swans as two-goal favourites early in the week, which we believe is a bit generous considering the poor form of the Hawks. We have the Swans bringing in momentum from their demolition job of the Eagles and proving far too strong for the inexperienced Hawks.
