2019-20 A-League Season Betting Tips
Minor Premiership
It’s an exciting time of the season for all clubs whose expectations haven’t yet been tarnished. The betting markets have three main title hopes including last season’s champions Sydney FC, reigning minor premiers Perth Glory, and 2017-18 champions Melbourne Victory. Instead of making a play on the title however, we prefer to play the Minor Premiership market, because it’s a bit more predictable considering it goes for 29 weeks, rather than just three or four – and you get pretty much the same odds! Last year it was Perth Glory who claimed the Minor Premiership and the two seasons prior to that were won by Sydney FC. We’re keen to back in the latter to return to the top of the table in 2019-20. Sydney may have lost a couple of key players in Alex Brosque and Josh Brillante, but the acquisition of Kosta Barbarouses, Alexander Baumjohann, Luke Brattan and Ryan McGowan are superb. We do expect Perth and Melbourne Victory to be thereabouts again this season, but the consistency of Sydney, particularly during the regular season, over the past three years, coupled with the talent and depth of their squad means we just can’t look past them here. Expect Sydney FC to be the best team once again over 29 weeks and take home the Minor Premiership.
Top Victorian Team
One of the more interesting markets this year is the Top Victorian Team market at Sportsbet. There are now obviously three teams in Victoria thanks to the inclusion of Western United this season, who will now rival Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City for memberships. Of the three we’re keen to take the double-up odds on Melbourne Victory. They’ve made some great moves in the off-season bringing in Robbie Kruse and Andrew Nabbout and will be led by new skipper Ola Toivonen up front. Melbourne City have gone through an overhaul of both their roster and their front office, so we expect them to come out of the blocks a touch slow, while Western United are a new club altogether and will require a fair bit of time to gel properly on the pitch, leaving Melbourne Victory as the team to beat in Victoria.
Top Goalscorer
Always a popular way to play the futures market is to predict the top goalscorer AKA Golden Boot winner. It’s always a tough market to predict, particularly in a volatile league such as the A-League, however, there are a few players that make a solid case this season. Our favourite of the favourites is Sydney FC’s Adam Le Fondre. The Italian had a superb year for the Sky Blues last season scoring 18 goals in 28 appearances, which saw him finish second behind Roy Krishna in the Golden Boot race. As we mentioned above, we expect Sydney FC to have another fantastic season and potentially defend their title from last year, which means there will be plenty of opportunities for Le Fondre, who will be leading their attack, to find the back of the net.
