A-League Round 20 Betting Tips
Wellington Phoenix vs Western United
Friday, 5:15pm AEDT
Wellington Phoenix continued their renaissance with another win over a quality team last weekend. Melbourne City were victims to a 1-0 defeat in a pretty compact performance from the home side. Phoenix have now won five of their past seven league matches, which has helped them soar into fifth spot on the ladder and move just three points away from second on the table.
Western United’s struggles continued last weekend when they were defeated 1-0 at home by Brisbane Roar. That was the new club’s fourth loss from their past six fixtures, which has come after a rather promising start to their inaugural campaign. United now find themselves in seventh spot on the ladder and four points adrift of sixth spot on the table.
Phoenix are quite clearly the form side of the two clubs here and the home ground advantage should only increase their chances of winning. Western United have shown the ability to compete when they’re on song, but recent form indicates this is Phoenix’s game to lose.
Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne Victory
Saturday, 7:30pm AEDT
Newcastle Jets pushed on late to secure a point against the Wanderers last time out and will be a little frustrated they didn’t get all three points from that matchup. Impressively, the Jets have how have now had four games straight where they’ve had 20+ shots on the opposing goal, but unimpressively, they’ve managed to secure just one win from their efforts.
Melbourne Victory’s season continues to go from bad to worse thanks to a 2-1 away loss to Melbourne City last time out. They were the recipients of the bye last weekend, which was much needed considering how much football they’ve played of late. Regardless, Victory face an uphill battle to make finals and need a big run of results to resurrect their season.
Surprisingly, the Jets are the form team coming into this fixture and will be buoyed by their home ground support. We expect them to finally deliver adequate results from their prominent attacks and seek revenge on the terror Victory have caused them in recent seasons.
Central Coast Mariners vs Sydney FC
Sunday, 6pm AEDT
Central Coast Mariners can’t catch a break at the moment, which was evident in their 2-0 away to Adelaide United last time out. They generated plenty of goal scoring opportunities, but failed to find the back of the net for the third time in their past five fixtures. The Mariner are now clear at the bottom of the ladder, which is a position they’ve become all too accustomed to in recent seasons.
Sydney FC have had a bye and a postponed matched in their past two matchdays, which means their squad will be well and truly rejuvenated for this weekend. Prior to their spell they were winners against Brisbane Roar, which was their fifth straight win in the league. Sydney are now mountains clear of the next challenger and are extremely well placed to reclaim their title as champions.
Here, we have top vs bottom in a clash between two clubs that couldn’t be in any different of form. Sydney may be coming off a two week hiatus, but the way they played coming into that break suggests they should be far too good for the Mariners here.
