A-League Round 17 Betting Tips
Newcastle Jets vs Western United
Saturday, 5pm AEDT
The Jets come into this off a 2-1 away loss to Wellington last weekend. It was their fourth loss on the spin and their seventh from their last eight games in what has just been a horrible stretch. They’ve managed to find the back of the net only six times during that span and as a result, they’re firmly glued to the bottom of the league table.
Western United were losers in another high-scoring affair against Adelaide. Banging in three goals for the second straight week wasn’t enough for them to get anything out of the game; such is their shakiness in defence. United have now lost three of their past four games and need to turn their form around ASAP to avoid slipping out of the top six.
The Jets won the earlier meeting between these clubs, which is one of just two wins they’ve managed this season. Considering that, we’re surprised to see them as the clear favourites here against a United team that has had far more success this season. We’re happy to be on the away side to get the result at big odds here.
Perth Glory vs Melbourne Victory
Saturday, 9:45pm AEDT
Perth Glory had to settle for a point in their most recent game against Melbourne City. They performed fairly well, but were unable to keep their winning streak alive, which ended at six. A win last weekend would’ve seen Glory leapfrog City into second spot, but they’ll now have to settle for third position for a little while longer.
Melbourne Victory’s disappointing season continued last weekend when they were 3-0 losers at home to Sydney FC. Not many gave them a chance against the league leaders and it was clear why when they were outplayed for the full 90 minutes. Victory have now lost three on the spin and come into this round in eighth spot on the table.
Glory are the clear form side in this fixture and at home, we don’t see any reason why they won’t get the chocolates. They’re the much better of the two clubs and should be winning this without too many problems.
Central Coast Mariners vs Western Sydney Wanderers
Sunday, 4pm AEDT
The Mariners struggles continued last weekend when they were beaten at home by Brisbane Roar. They failed to find the back of the net for the second straight week and have now lost four of their past five games after showing glimpses of improvement prior. The Mariners come into this fixture sitting in second last spot on the table but are just seven points outside the top six with plenty of games to come.
The Wanderers had a much needed break last weekend with their scheduled bye. Prior to their rest they were losers at home to Glory (1-0), which was their second straight match without a goal. The Wanderers have lost three in a row and have only managed to win one match from their past 11 after starting the season on fire.
This certainly isn’t the sexiest fixture on this weekend but it’s one that we believe holds a lot of value in the betting market. The Mariners are far too long at $3 even if they’re one of the worst teams in the league. The Wanderers have lost eight of their past 10 games and you’d have to be crazy to be backing them in at this point.
