Sydney FC vs Melbourne City
Sunday August 30th, 6:30pm (AEST)
What a double-header it was on Wednesday night! Both Sydney FC and Melbourne City went in as similarly quoted favourites and both got the job done in 2-0 score lines to advance to the Grand Final. Sydney have been there and done it on the biggest stage four times in their rich history and are the reigning champions, while Melbourne City will be playing in the first ever Grand Final in club history. Kick-off is 6:30pm on Sunday night from Bankwest Stadium in Sydney.
Sydney FC came flying out of the blocks against Perth on Wednesday night with a blistering first half, banging in two goals and it could’ve easily been more. Their second half performance was a little bit concerning with how defensive they became, but it didn’t hurt them in the end and they were able to secure a relatively comfortable win. The reigning champs were in some very ordinary form coming into that final, so their performance would’ve injected plenty of confidence back into their playing group.
Melbourne City started on the back foot in their semi-final clash with Western United and were very lucky to be on level terms at half time. The second half started just like the first, but everything changed in the 68th minute when Golden Boot win Jamie Maclaren was awarded a penalty, which he coolly converted. City gained the edge from that point onwards and finished up solid winners. They’ve been one of the top teams all season and have thoroughly deserved the entry to their first ever Grand Final.
Sydney and Melbourne City met just the twice in the regular season and the points were split with each team notching a win. Sydney won the earlier season meeting 2-1, but City hit back with a 2-0 win in their most recent clash, which was also their first game back for them from the long hiatus.
It’s been a fantastic campaign from Melbourne City to make the big dance for the first time, but the two semi-final matches on Wednesday night make us lean towards Sydney to go back to back. They were scintillating in the first half and put in a performance that was reminiscent of the way they were playing in the first ¾ of the season. You can get them to win in normal time at a great quote (around $2.50). But we’ll err on the side of cautious and back them to lift the cup.
