One again Before You Bet is back with our rolling Brownlow Medal Tracker for the 2018 season. We’ll be providing comments for every game of the season, along with our vote predictions to help with your projections for the 2018 AFL season.
Our Brownlow predictions are one of the most popular aspects of the site with punters able to scoop huge profits using the information found in these pages. You’ll be able to stay up to date with our current Top 20 2018 Brownlow Medal leaderboard, while there will be links to every single round-by-round voting posted there.
For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can form a 'range' for each player (ie a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.

The Bulldogs went goalless in the second half to let the Pies run away with a comfortable win. Adam Treloar was a force in the middle with 40 possessions and 2 goals, and was well fed by Brodie Grundy who dominated the ruck with 38 hitouts along with 26 disposals and 7 marks. Tom Phillips (36 disposals, 1 goal), Scott Pendlebury (32 disposals) and Jack Crisp (32 disposals, 10 marks) were also prolific. Toby McLean tried hard for the Dogs with 33 disposals and 10 tackles, while Jack Macrae picked up 30 possessions but won’t figure in the votes.

The Premiers got a scare but came away with the points in the end. With Jack Riewoldt concussed in the first five minutes of the game, Josh Caddy stepped up as a forward target with 6 goals from 24 disposals, 6 marks and 7 tackles in a best-on-ground performance. Trent Cotchin was again good with 32 disposals and a goal while Dusty Martin is a sneaky chance for a vote with an eye-catching 26 disposals and 2 goals. For the Saints, Jade Gresham had a day out with 6 goals, while Jack Steven (36 disposals, 9 marks, 1 goal) and Seb Ross (37 disposals, 9 marks) had a lot of the ball without being overly damaging.

Sydney got the job done in wet conditions at the Gabba, with skipper Josh Kennedy leading the way with 34 disposals and 7 tackles. Jake Lloyd (26 disposals), George Hewett (28 disposals) and Zak Jones (25 disposals) were also contributors in an even team performance. Dayne Beams had a big game with 38 disposals and a goal for the Lions, with Mitch Robinson (35 disposals, 7 tackles) enjoying the conditions. Stefan Martin was the best big man on the ground with 58 hitouts, 15 disposals and 6 tackles.

A horrible game saw the Cats get an ugly win with Tom Stewart sensational across half-back with 26 disposals and 10 marks, including 11 interceptions. Patrick Dangerfield will be back in the votes for his 29 disposals and a goal, while Sam Menegola was also good with 23 disposals, 10 tackles and 2 goals. For the Blues, Kade Simpson (33 disposals, 7 marks) won a lot of the ball, as did Patrick Cripps (31 disposals, 7 marks).

The Giants are in freefall with the Bombers getting the upset away win. Dyson Heppell was great with 28 disposals, along with David Zaharakis who had 33 touches and a goal. Devon Smith also enjoyed playing against his old side with 21 disposals, 13 tackles and a goal. For the Giants, Stephen Coniglio is a chance for votes once again with 32 disposals, 7 tackles and a brilliant goal from the boundary. Callan Ward (34 disposals) was also good, while Heath Shaw also racked up 34 possessions but most of those were from kicking it to himself.

After the chatter about West Coast’s home ground advantage last week, the Eagles proved they are the real deal with a big win in Melbourne against a finals contender. Andrew Gaff was best on ground with 35 disposals, 12 marks, 5 tackles and a goal in a complete performance. Elliot Yeo (28 disposals) and Jack Redden (25 disposals) were good in support while Nic Naitanui had his best game for the year with 34 hitouts, 12 disposals, 6 tackles and a goal. For the Hawks, Jaegar O’Meara was a good contributor with 20 touches and 3 goals, while Isaac Smith (24 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal) was also good.

Melbourne were outstanding in Alice Springs with young gun Angus Brayshaw showing his immense talents with 37 disposals, 14 marks and 3 goals in a huge performance. Clayton Oliver ended with 31 disposals and 10 tackles, and Jack Viney was back to his old form with 35 disposals. Up forward, Jesse Hogan finished with 5 goals from his 20 possessions and 11 marks, while Alex Neal-Bullen collected 3 goals from 23 disposals. Rory Laird (30 disposals, 10 marks) and Matt Crouch (34 disposals) won plenty of the ball, but hard to see them in the votes in such a one-sided contest.

The Roos continue to surprise in 2018 with an away win in Perth against Freo. Nat Fyfe (31 disposals) was dominant early, but in the end, Ben Jacobs won the duel while picking up 29 disposals, 9 tackles and a goal for himself. Jarrad Waite broke the game open with his 19 posessions and 3 goals, while Kayne Turner had one of his best games with 23 disposals and a goal. Michael Walters was best for Freo with 27 disposals and 2 goals.
