It looks like another interesting Saturday as we offer more horse racing betting tips! This time we are looking at the P.B. Lawrence Stakes!
Back To Caulfield P.B. Lawrence Stakes Western Front Commemoration 1400m - Group 2
Some quality racing this weekend at Caulfield with one Listed race and two Group 3's supporting the main race on the card, the Group 2 P.B.Lawrence Stakes.
We have a field of 14 set to line up over 1400m in what looks to be a very open race.
The track is currently rated a Good 4 and while there is some drizzling rain predicted late on Friday in Melbourne, Saturday looks to be clear weather so we should remain at a Good 4.
From my initial look at the race I could see about 5 winning chances, so lets go through the runners:
SMOKIN' JOEY: Fair when resuming from a spell last start, finishing 5th of 10 behind Lord Of The Sky. Fitter here and 1400m suits him better but can't see him being good enough to turn the tables.
THE CLEANER: Finally back after 248 days off the track! The last time we saw him we thought he should have been retired, but it's been a long and steady build up to get him back firing on all cylinders. Good first up record, won his trial very well and finished 2nd in this race last year. Chance.
LORD OF THE SKY: I can never catch this horse. Didn't expect him to win last start but he did and he did it well, too. Two concerns for me here. He will have to work from barrier 11 and won't get to lead with The Cleaner in the race (last start he got an easy lead), and the step up to 1400m is a slight query. Still remains a chance.
JACQUINOT BAY: Won two on the trot at Flemington in lower grade to start the prep, but was beaten 5 lengths last start. Freshened up coming into this and draws to get a good run but may just be outclassed here.
ENTIRELY PLATINUM: Has the ability to run a big race at this level, particularly when fresh, but he was below his best last prep. Has had a good jump out leading into this but will need plenty of luck from barrier 14. Prepared to overlook him.
AWESOME ROCK: Finished 2nd behind Preferment in the Group 1 Australian Cup last prep but he tends to need his first up run. He will be better suited over 2000m so prepared to wait until later in the prep.
TALL SHIP: Never placed first up or over this distance so his looking to others.
MAGNAPAL: Average first up but that was to be expected over the unsuitable 1200m. Has two wins from three starts over this distance but is probably looking for even further and this is a fairly hot field.
BERISHA: Likely to need further and will probably also need the run first up from a spell. Will go back from the wide barrier.
MAHUTA: Reasonable performance first up behind Lord Of The Sky, beaten 2.75 lengths back in 3rd. This distance suits him much better, however, as he is undefeated from 4 starts over 1400m. Draws to get a great run and he shapes as a great chance in this.
SUAVITO: Group 1 winner over this course and distance before, and most importantly they've come when she's been fresh. First up here, draws well and looks every chance of recording another win here.
SET SQUARE: First up from a long spell but has performed well fresh before and at this course and distance. Might just need the run after so long off and over the shorter distance.
MISS ROSE DE LAGO: Has a good first up record and an outstanding record at this track so she looks sure to run a big race from the inside gate here. Watch the market because if the money comes she could well win.
JAMEKA: Classy mare that resumes from a spell but is looking for the longer trips. Has run well fresh and at this course and distance before so a big run wouldn't surprise.
Summary
Five winning chances here for mine: The Cleaner, Lord Of The Sky, Mahuta, Suavito, Miss Rose De Lago, with Jameka, Awesome Rock,Entirely Platinum and Set Square all capable of running well, too.
I think the two at the top of the market are definitely the ones to be backing though. Mahuta is undefeated over this distance and is much better suited here than he was last start behind Lord Of The Sky in the Bletchingly. Second up, 1400m, draws well and should be hard to beat.
The one that could beat him is Suavito who has won Group 1's over this track and distance before. She absolutely flies fresh and looks very well suited here first up. If she produces her best she will win.
The 1400m might just test Lord Of The Sky. It's good to see The Cleaner back at the track but he's been off a long time. Miss Rose De Lago is capable of running a big race - watch the market for any hit on her.
1st MAHUTA
2nd SUAVITO
3rd MISS ROSE DE LAGO
4th LORD OF THE SKY
