AFL Round 14 Preview & Betting Tips
Richmond vs St Kilda
Saturday 7:25pm (AEST), June 17th, MCG
After a week off following their disappointing loss to the Hawks, the Saints bounced back in Round 13 with an impressive road victory over the Swans. In a back and fourth game, the Saints kicked away in the last quarter, piling on five goals to two after the final break to record a 14 point victory.
The talented Saints youngsters continued to impress as Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera racked up 30 disposals off half back while Mitch Owens kicked two goals to go along with 21 touches. With the win, the Saints moved into 5th place on the AFL ladder, just one win behind the Demons in 3rd.
The Tigers have been great since Andrew McQualter took over for Damian Hardwick three weeks ago. They lost their opening game to the Power but have since bounced back with two straight wins over the Giants and Dockers, both on the road.
They’ll be under more familiar conditions of the MCG this week but will still be without some key players including Jacob Hopper, Tom Lynch, Robbie Tarrant. They’ll also be missing Marlion Pickett, after facing a Perth court on Monday.
The Tigers start as 5.5 point favourites at home, which seems about right given their resurgence in Sydney and Perth over the last two weeks. Finding it tough to split the teams at that line, but I do really like the overs here with the point line at 157.5.
The Tigers have put up 97.5 points per game across the last two weeks and although the Saints have the best defence in the league, I think they lose some of that effectiveness at the much bigger MCG. The Saints were involved in one of their highest scoring games of the year in their only MCG clash this season, back in Round 3 against the Bombers when 166 points were scored.
The Tigers have been playing a very aggressive style, going back to their chaos ball roots of their premiership days over the last few weeks. I expect this to be a slightly more free flowing game than we are used to seeing when it comes to games involving the Saints. Back the overs here.
