ATP World Tour Betting Tips

2019 Rogers Cup

The Canadian Open, currently known as the Rogers Cup for sponsorship reasons, is an annual tennis tournament held in Montreal, Canada. It’s the third oldest tennis tournament in the world and is one of eight Masters 1000’s held during a calendar year. The most winningest men’s player at the Rogers Cup is Ivan Lendl with six titles (1980-89), while the defending champion is Rafael Nadal, who has won here four times (2005-18).

2019 Seeded Players

(1) Rafael Nadal (2) Dominic Thiem (3) Alexander Zverev (4) Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) Kei Nishikori (6) Karen Khachanov (7) Fabio Fognini (8) Daniil Medvedev (9) Roberto Bautista Agut (10) Borna Coric (11) John Isner (12) Nikoloz Basilashvili (13) Marin Cilic (14) David Goffin (15) Gael Monfils (16) Milos Raonic

Contenders

Eight of the world’s top 10 ranked men’s players will feature in the Rogers Cup, which is no surprise when you consider there’s 1000 valuable ranking points up for grabs for the winner. Pretty much the only big names missing this year’s tournament is #1 ranked Novak Djokovic and #3 ranked Roger Federer.

The overwhelming favourite at Montreal this week is Rafael Nadal, who’s priced at around $3 at all major betting agencies. Even though he’s the defending champion and has won here four times, he hasn’t played in some time and his odds represent no value at all, so we’ll be fading him this week.

After Rafa, you get out to all double-figure odds, led by Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem at around $11. Not sure why Zverev is equal second favourite here. He’s had a nightmare season when you compare it to his two previous campaigns, and it doesn’t look like turning anytime soon. Thiem’s coming fresh off a title win in Austria, so he’s got form and confidence on his side.

The other highly-fancied players that are quoted at $15 or less at major agencies are next-gen stars Stefanos Tsitsipas ($13) and Daniil Medvedev ($13). Both had solid weeks in Washington and were dispatched by Nick Kyrgios ($26) in the semi-final and final, respectively. Of the three, Tsitsipas is our pick to have the best week in Montreal. He was a runner-up here last year and is running into some of his best form.

The other big names that always need to be considered are Marin Cilic ($26)Stan Wawrinka ($34), and Milos Raonic ($23). Wawrinka and Raonic both have really tough draws and are also drawn to play each other in the third round should they both make it. Cilic gets a comfortable first two rounds but will face the in-form Dominic Thiem in the third round.

Prediction

At the end of the day, it’s a really open tournament with plenty of title hopes. We believe the best value lies with Dominic Thiem. He’s had another terrific campaign, and while hard courts aren’t his preferred surface, he’s more than capable to stringing together big wins. We’ll have him on top, but will also play Tsitsipas at his price and have a little something on Cilic in case he upsets Thiem in the third round.

Value: Tsitsipas $13, Cilic $26

Dominic Thiem Title

$11
