Emily Seebohm
Seebohm is the favourite to take out both the 100m and 200m backstroke Gold in Rio. She has improved since London where she was a fingernail from finishing in first place and has stated that she has never been stronger mentally. In 2012 she barely ate before her 100m final but that won’t be an issue this year. She is the current Australian record holder in both events and we suggest backing her to take out both gold medals in a multi.
TIP: Seebohm 100m & 200m backstroke gold @ $3.76 with Sportsbet
Mack Horton
The 20-year-old narrowly missed out on the London Olympics as a teenager but he will get his chance to shine in Rio. He is currently ranked, as the number 1 in the world at the 400m but isn’t the favourite to take out the gold, which gives punters good odds with the bookmakers. His preferred event is the 1500m and he is an outside chance of taking gold in that event but is still the second favourite to do so.
Horton was very impressive at the Olympic trials recording a time of 3.41 in the 400m, which is second only to Ian Thorpe on the best all time Australian list. He beat the Olympic qualifying time by a massive six seconds.
TIP: Horton to win 400m gold medal @ $3.20 with Sportsbet
TIP: Horton to win 1500m gold medal @ $5.00 with Sportsbet
Hockey
Australia are the favourites to take home the gold medal in the men’s hockey whilst the women’s side is behind the Netherlands with the bookmakers. The men’s side has earned a bronze medal since the 2004 Olympics where they won their first ever gold medal. It has been disappointing semi-final matches that have let them down as they took leads into halftime but were ultimately defeated. They have a lot of experience and youth in the side and will be a tough team to beat.
TIP: Men’s Hockey team to win gold @ $2.95 with Ladbrokes
The women’s side will be up against it to win gold as the Dutch side is a very powerful team. However, the Hockeyroo’s do have a strong squad and if there is a team to take down the Netherlands then it will be the Australians. If you want to take a risk then back them at great odds.
TIP: Women’s Hockey team to win gold @ $6.00 with Ladbrokes
Jessica Fox
Fox will be attending her second Olympics at the young age of just 22. Four years ago she took home the silver medal at just 18. The experience she will now have under her belt along with six World Championship titles, we have her winning the gold medal and at a great price we suggest betting a few extra units.
TIP: Fox to win women’s canoe – K1 Slalom @ $3.10 with Sportsbet
Anna Meares
Meares will be attending her fourth Olympics and whilst she no longer has the youth on her side, she does have the experience and mentality that could see her get over the line first. She claimed the gold medal in the London games for the sprint but will enter Rio as an outside chance to defend her title. However, if you believe the 32-year-old still has it in her, you can back her at a great price.
TIP: Meares @ $7.00 with Sportsbet
Caroline Buchanan
Buchanan will use the disappointment of the London games to push her throughout her races in Rio. She was the favourite in the final but had a slow start that led to her missing out on a medal. She is a five-time BMX Bike World Champion and is the number 1 rider in the world, however the bookmakers have her as the third favourite, which gives punters a great price for a world champion.
TIP: Buchanan to win gold @ $4.50 with Sportsbet
Rugby 7s
The women’s Rugby 7s team is the current World Champions and will enter the Olympics as the favourites to win the Gold medal. It is the first time the Olympics will have rugby since 1924 and it would be great to see our Aussie girls live up to their potential. They have an easy draw and should cruise into the knock out stages.
TIP: Australian women’s Rugby to win gold @ $2.00 with Ladbrokes
