The Boomers got their campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games off to a terrific start but now face one of the toughest challenges in world basketball when they take on Canada. Tip-off for this Group A blockbuster is set for 9:30pm (AEST) on Tuesday, and we have a full preview and best bet below!
2024 Paris Olympic Games – Men’s Basketball
Australia vs Canada (Tuesday 9:30pm AEST)
The Boomers were fantastic in their opening Group A clash against Spain where they overcame the #2 ranked nation by 12 points in a statement performance (92-80). A blistering first quarter where they put up 31 points largely set up the win for the Boomers, although they did momentarily fall behind in the third term before snatching back momentum.
There were a number of strong performers for the boomers although it was no surprise that the three most influential were Jock Landale (20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists), Josh Giddey (17/8/8) and Patty Mills (19 points). Dyson Daniels was also superb on the defensive end and Jack McVeigh hit some timely shots down the stretch.
The lack of perimeter shooting for the Boomers was a concern coming into these Games, although it certainly wasn’t an issue in their opening game where they connected on 12/24 from deep. However, expecting to keep up such efficiency moving forward is a massive ask, particularly with more athletic/better defensive nations to come.
Likewise, Canada got their campaign off to a great start with a strong win against the dangerous Greece who are of course led by superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek Freak was massive as expected with 34 points but it was the more well-rounded Canadians who came out on top by seven points (86-79).
A superstar in his own right, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led from the from with 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists, while RJ Barrett was impactful on offence with 23 points. Jamal Murray was quieter than expected with only 8 points but is sure to have a lot bigger impact moving forward.
Game Prediction: It’s a mouth-watering matchup we have on our hands here and one where the Boomers will go in as underdogs and for good reason. On paper, Canada have the superior talent and it isn’t particularly close. SGA is one of the best in the world and containing him will be tricky although the Boomers do have the cattle at the guard position to make things at least tough.
The current game line of 6.5 points seems to be about right and isn’t worth exploring in my opinion, although taking the unders in the total points line certainly is. The Boomers, although lacking potency on offence, have a great defensive lineup and along with their determination should be able to restrict a big score. I just can’t see this one turning into a shootout.
