2024 Premier League Darts Playoffs Preview
Friday May 24th 4:15am AEST
1st Semi Final: Luke Littler vs Michael Smith
The first Premier League Semi Final sees 17-year old sensation Luke Littler take on Michael Smith.
Smith squeezed into the top four in the last week of play at Sheffield when beating Nathan Aspinall, before going on to defeat Littler in the Semi Final and World #1 Luke Humphries in the Final for his second nightly win of the Premier League season. The 2023 World Champion has struggled to recapture his best form since that famous win over Michael Van Gerwen, which included THAT leg, but he is a confidence player and his confidence will be up after that Sheffield win.
Smith has to take on Luke Littler, who is alongside Humphries in terms of being the best player in the world on current form. Littler won four nights throughout the Premier League, sitting on top of the table - a remarkable effort given he is just 17 years of age. Keep in mind his only PDC experience before getting a Premier League spot was the 2024 World Championship, where he had an incredible run, losing in the Final to Humphries in an epic contest. Overall, he has been the best player throughout the Premier League, but at times, he can be wayward with his throwing, which was seen in last week's Semi Final against Michael Smith given he was 4-1 up but ended up losing 6-5. However Littler loves the big stage and loves putting on a show. I think he'll win and secure a spot in the Final.

2nd Semi Final: Luke Humphries vs Michael Van Gerwen
The second Semi Final sees the World #1 Luke Humphries take on seven-time Premier League champion Michael Van Gerwen.
This has been a debut Premier League for Humphries and much like his late 2023 form, he has been outstanding and alongside Littler as the best player throughout the year. His form away from the Premier League has been excellent with Euro Tour wins and his form the last few weeks of the Premier League has been #1. His overall average of 100.87 for the Premier League is comfortably the best of the Premier League and if he brings that here, he is going to cause real trouble for Van Gerwen, who lost to Humphries in the Semi Final at Sheffield last week.
However we know that Van Gerwen is near unplayable when in the mood, and usually the big stage is when he gets in that mood! He has openly said he is playing to break records, win big tournaments and get back to being the best player in the world. Could it start here? Potentially. He won four nights of the Premier League, but at times, he threw very poorly and looked well down on what we know he is capable of. The Semi Finals, is a best of 19 legs, not a best of 11 like it is during the regular season, so with the longer format, that should suit Humphries, who is near unbeatable when he has momentum and gets a roll on, and that has been seen against Van Gerwen, notably during the Players Championship Final in an epic last year. He is the world #1 for a reason and will want to make a statement against the man who has been the best player this century alongside Phil Taylor.
