The Roos are on the board and the Dees are still undefeated after 9 rounds of the 2021 AFL season. The star performers of the round include Cam Guthrie who is in incredible form at the moment, Marcus Bontempelli is rising up the Brownlow leaderboard while Jarryd Lyons was excellent against his old side. A couple of the quiet acheivers that may be worth exploring are Clayton Oliver and Ollie Wines. Oliver is playing in an undefeated team, and although he's competing for votes with some stars, he's been ultra consistent this season - we have him polling in 6 of the 9 rounds this season - so the $17 at Sportsbet might be worth a nibble. The Saints will be devastated with their missed opportunities as poor kicking for goal cost them the chance to knock off the Cats. While the Saints were red-hot with their pressure, it was Cam Guthrie who stood firm in the middle for the Cats with 36 disposals, 7 tackles and a goal and should pick up the three votes. Mitch Duncan (30 disposals, 15 marks), Isaac Smith (27 disposals, 11 marks) and Zach Touhy (31 disposals, 6 marks) were also very good for Geelong. Brad Crouch was off the ground for a long period for a concussion test but still picked up 28 disposals and 9 tackles, while Jack Steele tried hard with 23 disposals, 11 tackles, 7 clearances and a goal for the Saints.

The Swans started slow but gained the ascendency to defeat the Pies. Callum Mills (28 disposals, 7 tackles) continued his good season, while Isaac Heeney (22 disposals, 6 marks, 3 goals) and Justin McInerney (24 disposals, 7 marks) were also very good. Will Hoskin-Elliott (23 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal) roamed freely for the Pies, while Brayden Maynard (29 disposals) did the job on Buddy Franklin.

The Roos are on the board in 2021 as they fought out a gutsy win against the Hawks in Launceston. Jy Simpkin was a star with 38 disposals, 9 tackles and 13 clearances and will be fighting out for best-on-ground with Ben Cunnington (37 disposals, 13 clearances) who was also influential. Aaron Hall (28 disposals) provided some dash and Todd Goldstein (28 hitouts, 19 disposals, 1 goal) won the battle in the ruck. Chad Wingard (21 disposals, 2 goals), James Cousins (23 disposals, 6 tackles, 2 goals) and Blake Hardwick (28 disposals, 7 marks) were among the best for the Hawks.

Dayne Zorko was also superb with 34 disposals, 9 marks, 7 clearances and a goal, while our Brownlow leader Hugh McLuggage was again good with 24 disposals, 8 marks, 6 tackles and a goal. Daniel McStay was a force up forward with 14 disposals, 8 marks and 4 goals and may just pip McLuggage for a vote. David Swallow (29 disposals, 5 clearances) was best for the Suns.

The Tigers fans (and coach) didn’t want to travel the extra two train stops to Marvel Stadium but they came away with the points with a thrilling come-from-behind victory against the Giants. Liam Baker (33 disposals, 6 tackles, 8 clearances) loved having a run in the middle, while Dustin Martin (28 disposals, 5 clearances, 4 goals) was again superb. Jacob Hopper (35 disposals, 7 tackles, 11 clearances, 1 goal) was huge for the Giants, while Jesse Hogan (16 disposals, 9 marks, 4 goals) was a force up forward in the first half.

In a finals-like game, the Bulldogs proved they are the real deal as they beat the Power on their home turf. Ollie Wines (32 disposals, 8 tackles, 5 clearances, 1 goal) was a beast and Travis Boak (30 disposals, 7 tackles, 8 clearances) was typically influential.

It was a bit of a struggle, but the Dons will be pleased to get away with the four points. Another strong win for the Dees as they continue their undefeated start to the 2021 season. The Eagles were in 3rd gear but that was enough to account for the Crows. Jack Darling broke the game open with five goals in the 2nd quarter and ended with 15 disposals and 8 marks. Tim Kelly (31 disposals, 11 clearances) was again brilliant, while Jamie Cripps (25 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal) and Andrew Gaff (30 disposals, 7 marks) are also a chance for votes. Rory Laird was the stand out for the Crows with 36 disposals, 10 clearances and a goal.

For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
