AFL Round 13 Preview & Betting Tips
North Melbourne vs GWS
Sunday 3:20pm AEST, June 11th, Blundstone Arena
North Melbourne may sit 17th on the table, but their performances have been promising for a developing team over the last month. In that time the Kangaroos have fallen to Essendon and Sydney by less than one goal, and they were also very competitive against the premiership favourites, Collingwood. The young brigade have been at the forefront of North’s improved performances – George Wardlaw has shown signs of future greatness in his first few games at AFL level and the likes of Harry Sheezel, Will Phillips and Eddie Ford continue to perform well despite their lack of experience. Nevertheless, a win is needed if the Kangaroos are to maintain their morale, and this week presents a huge opportunity to finally taste victory. While the Giants aren’t the best outfit, it will be a tough task for North considering that seasoned midfielders Jy Simpkin and Hugh Greenwood will both miss with concussion. As such, even more weight will be heaped on the youth who are responsible for winning the ball in the middle.
As for GWS, well they are an interesting case. The Giants have been there or thereabouts in nearly every game they have played, but unfortunately, they only have four wins to show for it. In the last five weeks alone GWS have lost three matches by 15 points or less, losses I’m sure they will come to rue at seasons end. Nevertheless, it has been an impressive effort considering the lengthy injury list that the Giants are carrying which includes prime movers Josh Kelly and Sam Taylor. Nick Haynes will return for this do-or-die clash against the Kangaroos, and the Giants will go in as favourites with Toby Greene, Kieren Briggs, Lachie Whitfield and Tom Green in great form.
The Giants won this fixture last year by 49 points, but it’s clear to see that North Melbourne are an improved team this time around. However, against a midfield missing Davies-Uniacke, Simpkin and Greenwood, GWS should be able to get on top and dominate the clearance battle. With Hogan and Greene up forward, there is enough goalkicking talent for the Giants to put that advantage on the scoreboard, so I can see them winning this one.

Tom Green 30+ Disposals – Green has been incredibly consistent this season, notching up 30 disposals nine times. The midfield bull comes up against an undermanned North Melbourne midfield this week, and should be able to do as he pleases.
Will Phillips 25+ Disposals – Phillips has taken on greater responsibility in the absence of more experienced midfielders, registering 25+ disposals in each of his last two matches. That role should continue on Sunday, without Simpkin and Greenwood in the side.
Nick Larkey 2+ Goals – Larkey has enjoyed North’s renewed competitiveness, snagging two or more goals in each of his last six matches. The Giants are still lacking Sam Taylor as a defensive stopper down back, so Larkey should be able to hit the scoreboard again on Sunday.
Toby Greene 2+ Goals – The Giants skipper has had a great year, kicking multiple goals in every single game. In a game where GWS are favourites, it’s hard to see Toby having a down day, especially considering the stakes involved.
