The Western Bulldogs host the Geelong Cats at Marvel Stadium in Saturday night AFL action. Both teams are coming into this one off letting a very winnable game slip last week. The Bulldogs fell to the Suns at TIO Stadium, whilst the Cats let one slip in their home territory, losing to the Giants in Toby Greene’s 200th game.

Western Bulldogs vs Geelong
Marvel Stadium, Saturday, 7:25pm AEST
This shapes as a fascinating Saturday night match-up under the Marvel Stadium roof, with both teams looking to get things back on track after their respective losses last week. The Dogs have been able to build the stronger body of form over the last month, however this has largely been aided by their best players staying fit and finding a way to stay on the park. The Dogs welcome back Adam Treloar this week, who will boost the quality of the engine room in this one. There are players rounding into form, or displaying near career best form, all over the ground for the Dogs. Their backline looks set, and they have the talls to be able to match-up with Jeremy Cameron and Tom Hawkins, complimented by the run and carry from the likes of Dale, Richards and Duryea all greatly assisting their structure and ability to attack.
The Cats welcome back Gary Rohan, but lose another valuable piece to their defensive unit with Esava Ratugolea to miss through injury. This isn’t the same Geelong team that took the back end of 2022 by storm, and many top names and ball winners missing inaction. They will again be without Patrick Dangerfield, Mitch Duncan, Max Holmes, Cam Guthrie, Sam Menegola, Jack Bowes and Rhys Stanley, on top of the loss of Selwood after last year’s flag. Sam De Koning will be better for the run last week and should be more settled behind the ball this week, however the marking prowess of the Dogs talls will make life difficult for the largely undersized defensive 6 compared to past seasons. I thought there was enough talent still on the park last week to handle GWS comfortably, however it did feel as though too much was left to too few.
Geelong still have a handful of GMHBA Stadium matches in the next month or two, so although there are early signs of some panic, they still have time to turn things around and build in the back half of the season as their top players return. However, it’s difficult to make a strong case for them here under the roof against this Bulldogs outfit. I will take the Dogs at the line.

Tom Atkins 20+ Disposals – With so many top names out of the side, Atkins is seeing more time through the middle, and is worth considering here at the 20+.
Aaron Naughton 2+ Goals – With Ratugolea out, the big man stocks drop just a touch. Naughton should be a heavy focal point up forward, with De Koning likely to spend time across Naughton, Lobb and Ugle Hagan.
Jamarra Ugle Hagan 2+ goals – Plenty of chances last week, just failed to convert. Should enjoy being back under the roof.
