In a true David vs Goliath matchup, the 18th-placed West Coast Eagles will host table toppers Collingwood this weekend in Round 12 of the 2023 AFL Premiership Season.
The Eagles have triumphed in just one game this season, so it’s almost impossible to see them coming close to a rampant Magpies outfit in Perth this weekend.

AFL Round 12 Preview & Betting Tips
West Coast vs Collingwood
Saturday 4:35pm AEST, June 3rd, Optus Stadium
It’s hard to see how West Coast can sink any lower in 2023. The Eagles are sitting at 1-10 nearing the halfway mark of the campaign, and they continue to be cursed by a lengthy injury list that is showing no signs of shrinking. West Coast’s woes are such that their best result over the last five weeks was a 46-point loss to Richmond - hardly a feat worth celebrating. Thankfully, some reinforcements are on the way, with Luke Shuey expected back this week before Jeremy McGovern and Jack Darling return post-bye. Nevertheless, the Eagles appear destined to finish on the bottom of the table this year, and Collingwood are sure to pile on the pain at Optus Stadium again this Saturday.
Collingwood’s form has been starkly opposite to West Coast’s, with the Magpies winning each of their last four matches by 28 points or more. While none of those wins have come against top eight opposition, the Pies have shown that, unlike last year, they can really put sides away when required. The pieces are all coming together for the men in black and white to mount a flag charge, especially given that the 22 is nearing full strength. Billy Frampton, Pat Lipinski and Dan McStay should all be available for selection shortly, however Steele Sidebottom will miss a month of footy after injury his knee in his 300th game. Regardless, the Magpies are a team of role players and contributors, so there is no big reliance on a few stars to get the job done.
Surprisingly, West Coast have actually won two of the last three encounters between these teams, and of course there is the history of the 2018 Grand Final attached to this one. With that being said, these two clubs are a completely different proposition right now, and the Eagles are next to no chance of winning this one. Collingwood will most certainly win, and while they haven’t scored as heavily in recent matches, I can see them covering the almost generous line.

Jordan De Goey 25+ Disposals – De Goey is quietly putting together the best season of his career, and he should feast on the lowly Eagles at Optus. De Goey has hit 25 touches in each of his last three matches, with two 30+ efforts in that period, so he’s a great multi booster here.
Collingwood 40+ – West Coast have failed to get within 40 points of their opposition in their last five matches, and Collingwood are top of the ladder for good reason.
Mason Cox 2+ Goals – With Cameron back in the side, Cox has returned to the forward line for the most part, kicking three goals in two weeks. The big American has managed 2+ goals three times this year and given West Coast’s woes, he should share in plenty of Collingwood goals this weekend.
