AFL Round 12 Preview & Betting Tips
Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn
Saturday 1:45pm AEST, June 3rd, Adelaide Oval
There are a couple of potentially one-sided matchups on Saturday and Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn is certainly one of them.
Port Adelaide enter Round 12 in second spot on the ladder and will be absolutely brimming with confidence, while Hawthorn are sitting in 16th but would also be pleased with some of their recent performances.
As a result of ladder position, form, and home ground advantage, the Power are listed as the red-hot $1.13 favourites compared to the underdog price of $5.75 for the Hawks.
The Power have been excellent on their home deck this season and are quickly turning the Adelaide Oval into a fortress. They’ve won all but one of their matches there in 2023 and their only loss was against the Crows in the Showdown in Round 3.
In contrast, the Hawks have only one road win to their name and that came last weekend when they upset the Saints at Marvel Stadium.
The rebuilding Hawks have shown plenty of encouraging signs despite their 3-8 record, particularly in recent weeks. They’re riding a two-game win streak and as pleasing as that would be, it’s nothing compared to the Power’s league-high eight-match win streak.
A big reason for the Power’s tremendous form has been because of the play of their young midfield which consists of Zak Butters, Connor Rozee, and Jason Horne-Francis. Butters has had four clear BOG’s in his last six matches and is becoming one of the major fancies for the Brownlow Medal.
The Hawks also have a good young midfield with the likes of Jai Newcombe and Will Day showing plenty of upside, although they’re a couple of years behind the Power’s engine room in terms of career progression.
The Hawks, at full strength, could’ve proved difficult to deal with in this fixture, but they’ll be without their skipper and clearly their most important player in James Sicily due to suspension. His absence creates a massive hole in their defence which will now be extremely inexperienced on Saturday.
Without Sicily barking instructions, I can’t see how the Hawks show enough resistance over four quarters to cover the 37.5-point spread. The Power should be winning this one by 10+ goals in my opinion.
Port Adelaide -37.5

Zak Butters 25+ Disposals – Has just been racking up the touches in recent weeks. He’s had over 30 in each of his last three games and should get to at least 25 here.
Will Day 25+ Disposals – Is averaging over 26 disposals per game this season and is coming off 30 against the Saints last weekend.
Junior Rioli 2+ Goals – A couple of the Power forwards will likely have a field day against the Hawks and Rioli is one who’s certainly capable. He’s great value for 2+ goals.
