AFL Geelong vs St Kilda Betting Tips

GMHBA Stadium, Saturday 14th August, 4.35pm (AEST)

Both the Cats and Saints have plenty riding on this game, with the home side looking to sure up a spot in the top two while St Kilda are fighting for their finals chances down in 11th place.

Match Preview

The Saints had a marvellous win against the Swans on the weekend with a really battered side. They had a host of players out and managed to upset the Swans at Marvel Stadium to keep their chances of playing finals slightly alive. They currently sit just two points behind GWS in eighth place, but have a pretty poor percentage, so will likely need to win both of their remaining games and hope other results go their way.

It makes you wonder what could have been for the Saints, and two losses in particular come straight to mind. They led the Crows by 33 points in the third quarter back in Round 13 only to lose and in Round 20, they were dismal against an out of form Blues side. If they just had have won those two games, they would currently be in 7th spot on the ladder and would have all but locked up a finals spot despite some embarrassing losses earlier in the season.

At the end of the day though, the Saints have had the toughest draw in the competition this far by a fair way, and their strength of schedule is on display again this weekend as they face the Cats for the 2nd time this season.

Geelong had top spot within their sights on the weekend but were defeated by the Giants down at GMHBA Stadium in the opening game of Round 21. The Cats were probably due for a loss after five on the trot, so we aren't reading too much into that one, and with the possible addition of Jeremy Cameron this week, their side could improve drastically at the selection table. Patrick Dangerfield suffered a throat injury in the clash against the Giants but has been cleared of any significant damage and should play this week.

The Saints are still ravaged by injuries and had some more bad news in the win over the Swans with star forward Max King going down with a quad injury. He joins a long list of Saints on the sidelines including Josh Battle, Jake Carlisle, Jarryn Geary, Jade Gresham, Dougal Howard, Ben Paton, Jack Billings and Mason Wood. Hunter Clark looks to be the only injured player that is a chance to return this week.

The difficulty of accurately picking AFL games has been no more prevalent than the last few weeks. In Round 20, the Saints were embarrassed by the Blues and the Cats had just won their fifth straight game. Fast forward one week and the Saints record a shock upset over the Swans and the Cats lose to the Giants. It makes this clash a tough one to pick, but given just how good the Cats have been down at GMHBA this season, it’s hard to look past them.

Before their loss to the Giants, they had won all six of their 2021 games there by an average margin of 34.6 points. With Cameron potentially back in the line-up, I think they win this one by 20+ points.

Jack Steele is making a serious run at the Brownlow. Prior to Round 21, BYB's Brownlow Bandit had Steele on 24.5 points and the Saints star may have racked up another three votes with a dominant performance against the Swans. Love him to have another 30 this week, as he has done in five of his last six games.

With the potential for Max King to be out through injury this week, the slack will have to be picked up by the other permanent Saints forwards. One guy who was in the mix a lot last week was Dean Kent, kicking three goals. Saturday marked his first goal since returning to the side back in Round 17, but in those five games he has averaged 1.6 shots on goal per game.

Tom Hawkins has booted 47 goals so far this season and kicked two against the Saints in their clash earlier in the season and last season, he booted 5 against them in shortened quarters.

Steele 30+ Disp.
Kent 1+ Goal
Hawkins 2+ Goal
