Cornet vs Siegemund (Approx 6pm AEST)

It takes a certain type of player for me to oppose Alize Cornet, and we have hit the jackpot today in my opinion as her opponent not only fits the bill, but Cornet is coming off a Title win last week against a number of players with a very different game style to Siegemund today.

First things first, although I did pick Martic to defeat Siegemund last week, I do believe the better player lost on the day. Fortunately, the fatigue and build up of tennis over the last fortnight took its toll on Siegemund as she faded late in the match, but I saw more than enough to justify taking her today to beat Cornet.

To beat Cornet on clay you need to have the perfect mix of power and movement. Look at Parmentier, Kostyuk, Svitolina and Voegele, the last four players to defeat Cornet on clay. None of them are the biggest hitters, but can hit big when they need, and none of them (outside of Svitolina), are the best movers on tour, but they have that right mix to be able to chase down what Cornet is doing, as well as finish off points at a high rate when the time is right.

The added bonus here is Cornet is coming off a full week last week, with the last 3 wins of the week coming against Stosur, Bouchard and Minella, all who overhit the ball regularly and struggled to deal with the movement and counterpunch tennis of Cornet on the day. Siegemund on the other hand has to right mix to handle Cornet, and even if Alize is slightly off having come from celebrating a title last week, it should be more than enough for Siegemund to get the job done today in Moscow.
