Grand Annual Steeplechase Day greets us on what is the last day of the 2023 Warrnambool May Races Carnival. And if the first two days are anything to go by, then it should be a cracker.
Saunter Boy was a highlight on Day 2 winning the Galleywood, which was a decent fill up for our followers.
We now head into the final day up 7.2 units for the Carnival, so hopefully we can build further on that as we present our best racing tips for Thursday at Warrnambool.
Warrnambool Racing Tips – Thursday, May 4th 2023
Race 1: Hammonds Paints Novice Hurdle - 11:15am (AEST)
(2) Nelson for the in-form Maher & Eustace stable will be another shorty but how can you fault how well the stable is going, especially with favourites in recent weeks. Galleywood winning jockey Steve Pateman takes the ride on this Frankel/Moonstone gelding who is 2 from 2 over the jumps in his short career. At Pakenham last time he won well and that was on a Heavy 10, the same track rating as he will get here.
(4) Cotton Eye Joe will race on speed and will have admirers after winning a Terang trial on April 21 over 2400m. Aaron Karu was on that morning and is on again here.
(5) Furioso faces his toughest test yet for Henry Dwyer but did win last start. That was on a Heavy 10 which he gets again.
(6) Port Guillaume is having his first try at The Bool but loves wet tracks and the Hayes Team have set him for this. The distance is no issue.
(2) Nelson - WIN
$2.15 (4 Units)
Race 3: TAB Best Friends Handicap - 12:15pm (AEST)
(7) Home Rule is a strong type who I can see hooking out wide here and hitting the line well over the 1100m. At The Valley he had no luck but when the gap appeared he was very strong late when placing 3rd. Maddi Raymond is a very good trainer and after another 3rd at Oakbank a fortnight ago he should be ready.
(6) Stripped Back for local Lindsay Smith will have support after winning twice when first up previously. He has placed on the Heavy and ran well in a jumpout a fortnight ago.
(9) Whipcracker Way isn’t racing as well as he was a year ago but has talent. First time at The Bool and may be value.
(10) Tsunami Ben comes over from Tassie after winning at Hobart. May lead this field.
(7) Home Rule - WIN
$3 (2 Units)
Race 7: Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m) - 2:30pm (AEST)
(1) Stern Idol is very short in the marker but will attract some very large bets into the thousands here. After leading he was a 15L winner at Pakenham last start and it did look like he could have won by more. First time over such a distance here but he is in the right hands and should win.
(7) Police Camp ran below what i thought he would on Tuesday but is very tough and will keep on running. At 20-1 plus he is worth a small play on a track that he enjoys.
(8) Rockstar Ronnie is having his first start at the track and will likely push forward. He will have his supporters at the price but his stablemate is better.
(10) Hurry Kane is the hope from Team Wilde and he just loves the wet having won 7 from 20 starts on the Heavy. He was poor in the trial but maybe he was playing.
(1) Stern Idol - WIN
$1.50 (5 Units)
Race 9: Warrnambool Cup - 3:55pm (AEST)
(7) Heart of Puissance is the go for Maddi Raymond and jockey Declan Bates. He has never been seen on a Heavy track but his Soft track form is good having won 2 from 8 and having been placed on 4 occasions. He is a lot fitter now and I don't think he was given his all when 6th at Lakeside last start with the stable having one eye on this one. He drops 2.5kgs for this and at the odds (17-1) he is worth a small wager.
(6) Not Usual Glorious loves the wet and the Fiorente/Temper Tantrum gelding will go forward in this race.
(1) Mankanyan is another who likes wet tracks having won 3 from 5 on the Heavy. The rise in distance will be right up his alley and he will settle midfield.
(4) Swords Drawn for the Moroney camp has drawn poorly in 18 but his trainer does know how to train a stayer or Cup horse. He was very good when 3rd at Flemington 2 starts back against some smart ones.
(7) Heart of Puissance - WIN
$17 (1 Unit)
