Sportsbet have once again turned their lawyers onto their opposition with a trademark infringement suit filed in Federal Court against fellow Australian sportsbook Sportsbetting.com.au.
Sportsbet, which is owned by global gambling giant Flutter Entertainment, claim that the Sportsbetting.com.au brand is too similar to their own with the prominent use of the words “sports” and “bet”. It’s not the first time that Sportsbet have been in this position after they attempted to prevent CrownBet from rebranding to the Sportingbet brand back in 2018.
At the time, Sportsbet won an injunction against CrownBet, which then became BetEasy, however the fight was over when Flutter acquired BetEasy’s parent company, The Stars Group, in a move which is set to merge the two Australian brands later this year.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Sportsbet have brought in intellectual property lawyer David Fixler from Corrs Chambers Westgarth to pursue the case.
“We believe that the resemblance between Sportsbet and Sportsbetting is undeniable,” a Sportsbet spokesperson said.
It was reported that Sportsbet attempted to resolve the matter amicably but a resolution could not be reached. Sportsbetting’s sole director Chris Reynolds has yet to comment.
