2015 PGA: Farmers Insurance Open Preview & Betting Tips

February 5th 2015, 11:19am, By: Johnny Houston

2015 PGA - Farmers Insurance Open Preview

Where: Torrey Pines GC (south) La Jolla, California, USA
When: Friday 6th February 2015 (First tee off at 4:00am)
Purse: $6,300,000 (winner $ 1, 134,000)

Hello and welcome to our first PGA Tour preview for the season of 2015. There have been four events so far and it’s some familiar faces making an impact with Patrick Reed, Jimmy Walker, Bill Haas and Brooks Koepka all in the winner’s circle. While Kuchar, Bubba and Aussie Jason Day all playing very well, Jimmy Walker should get an extra mention as he leads the Fed Ex Cup standings and a week before taking out the Sony Open (by nine shots) he finished second to Patrick Reed in the tournament of champions. Clearly a purple patch but he has won tournaments early in the season in previous years and then disappeared, so it might be time to fade Mr Walker.

Aussie Aussie Aussie!

Jason Day is looking for redemption after finishing second to Scott Stallings last year. He’s only played in two events this season but he is looking much focused and has been very productive and as a result he is ranked no.1 in greens in regulation at 77.08% and also no.1 in birdie average with 5.38 per round. It’s always good to see an Aussie playing well and I am recommending a play on Jason Day to finish in the top 10 at $2.20 (sportsbet) (2 units)

Next on the agenda is none other than Tiger Woods. It didn’t take long for everyone to jump on the “Tiger Woods is done” ban wagon. Yes he was flubbing a few chips and yes he shot 82 but guess what, it happens to every golfer. We just haven’t seen it from this super human before. I am not ready to bury one of the greatest golfers of all time just yet. I am recommending a play on Tiger Woods to make the cut at $2.05 (sportsbet) (2 units) and here’s why.

-He shares the course record here at -22 under par

-Tiger has won at Torrey Pines eight times.

-Most recently in 2013

-If it was any other course I would probably stop and think twice about it but Tiger will come out and play with a chip on his shoulder and although he’s probably not in a position to win it (although I wouldn’t count him out) I do think he makes the weekend!

There is one trend that I have noticed in the past couple of years on the PGA Tour and that is how much the gap has closed between worst player in the field and the best player. Already this year we have seen a playoff and the last two events have resulted in a one shot victory in a bunched up leader board. I believe there is value this week (and possibly positive EV most weeks) in playing Yes there will be a playoff at $3.50 (sportsbet) (2units)

So who’s going to win?

It should be a great weekend for golf with temperature in the mid 20’s and hardly a breath of wind. My pick to win it all is Australian Open champion Jordan Speith at $13 (1 unit)

I believe he will win multiple tournaments this year and could be the only player that can keep up Superstar Rory McIlroy.
