After thrilling weekend at Pebble Beach for the US Open, the 2019 PGA Tour continues this week as we had to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship. Bubba Watson will be looking to pick up his fourth Travelers Championship trophy amongst a fairly strong field.
We have a full preview and bedding tips for the weekend’s action here.
2019 Travelers Championship Betting Tips
The Traverlers Championship is played each year in Cromwell, Coneticut, and is usually a nice respite for players after a brutal week at the U.S. Open. This weekend will be no different, and players should take advantage of the relatively easy course layout.
The Course
TPC at River Highlands is the annual host of the Travelers Championship since the 1991 season. Players will be thankful for the ease in both length and difficulty at the TPC Course, which plays at around 6,800 yards for a Par 70.
The fairways at TPC at River Highlands are usually some of the easiest to hit on tour and a score in the mid to high teens under par generally wins here. Players who find greens in regulation and give themselves the best chance at making birdie throughout the week are kings.
TPC at River Highlands is most famous for the three hole stretch known as the ‘Golden Triangle’. It’s not an extremely difficult stretch of holes but it does provide one of the best viewing experiences throughout the driveable Par 4 15th and the 16th and 17th which both feature plenty of water.
The Field
The field will be headlined by the No.1 ranked player in the world, Brooks Koepka, who will be looking to win his third title of the year. Koepka finished second in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach on the weekend and should be a great chance here as arguably the best purer scorer in the world.
Considering we are just one week removed from the U.S. Open, it’s quite a stacked field that will be lining up at River Highlands on Thursday, including top ranked players such as Patrick Cantlay, Francesco Molinari, Paul Casey, Jason Day, Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, Luois Oosthuizen, Patrick Reed.
Noteable former winners of the Travelers who will be attempting to add another trophy to their cabinet this weekend include three time winner Bubba Watson, Jordan SPieth, Mark Leishman and two time winner Phil Mickelson, who won back to back trophies in 2001-02.
Predictions
Scoring is at a premium this weekend. It’s not the type of course for players who like to play it safe and be around the mark on a Sunday at three or four under. To win this tournament you need to go very low, so we’ll be hunting premium scorers this weekend.
Two of the absolute best in the business when it comes to scoring are Tony Finau ($26) and Tommy Fleetwood ($29). Both have strong all-round games and rank inside the 25 on tour in scoring average. F
Fleetwood ranks 17th in total shots gained and 21st in scoring average on the PGA Tour this season. He has played 12 tournaments this year and made the cut in all 12 and this will be his first trip to TPC at River Highlands. Is coming off a lean week at the U.S. Open so look for him to fire early here.
Top 10: $2.10
Tommy Fleetwood to win
$26
Finau is strong in all aspects of the game. He ranks in the top 50 on tour in shots gained, lowest round average, scoring average, birdie average and is arguably the most impressive player on tour to watch when he gets on that inevitable birdie train. Should eat this course for breakfast off the tee, giving him short irons and wedges into nearly every Par 4.
