With Summer just around the corner in the United States, the 2019 PGA Tour season heads to Texas this weekend for the annual Valero Texas Open. It's a big few weeks in golf as players prepare for The Masters next weekend and many will be using this weekend's Texas event as their final hit up before striving for the Green Jacket.
We take a look at the weekend's action and give our betting tips below.
2019 Valero Texas Open Betting Tips
Andrew Landry picked up his first PGA win at the Valero Texas Open last year and he'll be back to defend his title amongst a fairly stacked field considering The Masters is just a week away.
The Course
TPC San Antonio is a 7,435, Par 72, making it one of the longer courses on tour this season. It was designed by Greg Norman back in 2010 and offers a good balance for different golfers with different approaches to tackling the holes. The course has a strong emphasis on accuracy and precision from tee to green, with punishing wooded areas surround the majority of the fairways and tough green locations.
The course generally ranks among the hardest on the PGA Tour in terms of Greens in Regulation but it usually plays as one of the easier putting courses. 2018 winner Andrew Landry finished first in strokes gained from tee to green last season.
The course is probably most famous for the 16 that American Kevin Na scored on the par-4 9th hole in the first round of the 2011 Valero Texas Open. The horror hole for Na is testament to how accurate you have to be from tee to green at TPC San Antonio.
The Field
With The Masters just a week away, many of the top ranked golfers in the world are opting to sit this weekend out in preparation. However, there are still a bunch of high profile names making the trip to Texas this weekend. Last year's winner Andrew Landry will be back to defend his title as will other previous winners in Jimmy Walker (2015), Charley Hoffman (2016) and Kevin Chappell (2017).
A bunch of other high ranked golfers will also compete this weekend, headlined by the dynamic American young duo in Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler. Alongside those two will be Tony Finau, J.B Holmes, Matt Kuchar, Billy Horschel and more.
Tips
Tony Finau comes in as our best bet this weekend. The lighter field gives him a really solid chance and he should be in the mix on Sunday even if he doesnt have the greatest first three rounds. Finau hasn't won a PGA Tour event since 2016 and since then has racked up a massive 23 top 10 finishes. Bombed out of the WGC-Matchplay fairly early on the weekend but was impressive in The Players Championship a few weeks ago, finishing T22.
Finau ranks highly in the key categories for this weekend, 13th overall in shots gained off the tee, 40th overall in shots gained from tee to green and las season in particular was a GIR beast, ranking 18th on tour.
Danish up and comer Lucas Bjerregaard really impressed us in the WGC-Matchplay on the weekend, claiming some big scalps in Henrik Stenson and Tiger Woods on the way to the semi final loss against Matt Kuchar. He has been great in his last three PGA Tour events, finishing T12 at the Honda Classic earlier in the year before a strong T30 finish at The Players before the semi final appearance at the WGC-Matchplay.
